Hey guys. Hoping someone has some advice for me. I am fixing the transmission leaks on a type 1 and a few of the holes for the studs for the cover plates are really stripped. I tried to clean the threads up with a thread chaser and they seem to be beyond that. Would it be smart to tap them one size bigger so I can start fresh? Has anyone had this issue before and whats the best remedy? Looks like I can't use a helicoil because I won't be able to really torque them down enough. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

Helicoil or step studs will be ok, when drilling by hand note that the drill will make hole oversize more then normally, making threads not as tight as they should be.
I will sometime use a slightly smaller drill i.e for an M8 I use a .250 drill over a .265,when drilling by hand, Often I ream to size just because I have reamers, and its a one time fix, that has to be correct.
Biggest problem with helicoil is this, hole oversize, drilled crooked, tapping crooked. ect. VW used helicoils in several places in their engines.

do yall think there is enough meat between the casing and the diff housing to allow a 10mm to 8mm stud?

If not, 3/8" SAE is about 9.5mm if you want to go that path.

In soft alloys Time-Sert is a much better and longer lasting alternative than a Heli-Coil. Do it once and forget about it.

I also like solid threaded inserts way better than helicoils, but TimeSert requires their special tools.

EZ Lok is one brand https://www.ezlok.com/style/Solid-Wall/type/Insert?page=2
