|
|
Put 1000 miles on a new 1914. (Had new case, p/c, heads, everything) Valve broke (still not sure why it happened) and it trashed the head and poked a big hole in the piston. This happened pretty quickly, so other engine damage may be negligible. Trying to decide what to do with it. Its a long block now, since everything was moved to the replacement engine. Does have a set of 1.4 ratio rockers.
I have no projects coming up where I will need it. Obviously if I was keeping it, I would do a complete teardown, assess the crank, rods, etc, would do new bearings, possible cam, new set of heads and hopefully find a single 94mm P/C. But then it may sit on my shelf for years.
If I was going to try to sell it, without doing a complete teardown, what is something like this worth? Kind of a pig in a poke.... Thanks in advance. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

You really have to take it apart to know the condition of the insides. _________________ Glenn

take it apart or you'll get lowball offers /\/\/\ and it takes like no time to split a case _________________ These days people like me are hard to find- we don't give a damn what you think, about what we think. - JR

Yeah, I know Glenn - and the tentative plan is to do that over the winter. I just built a shelf in my garage to get it off my engine dolly and was thinking about "do I really need this" as my wife and I were setting it up on it.
Have to tell ya - what sucks is that it ran sooooooo well - I wimped out bought a 1955 longblock to replace it so I could get the car back on the road right away and the 1955 has been a lot of headaches. And I think the 1914 had as much power as my new stroker....maybe even more low end....Oh well...... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

I had a valve poke a hole in a piston.
It rattled around and poked a hole in the case.
It didn't leave anything inside to to salvage. _________________ Glenn

A little JB weld and a buffer and you will be good to go.

Mine didnt make it into the case fortunately - but there were chunks of piston in the bottom. I just have to put together a worse case shopping list and then decide if its worth doing.
But here's a question - What would be the least damage done if I was lucky? In other words, is it possible my rods, crank, cam, rockers, oil pump, etc are OK and I can get away with bearings, new piston and cylinder and heads? The rocker adjuster on the eaten valve looks a little beat up. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

i wouldnt even think about re useing the rods.... count the one that was connected to the "holy" piston bent. you may not see it , but i bet you it is. time to step up to atleast a 78mm crank too.... party time! _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |

I had a similiar situation happen to me, however I didn't punch through the piston. I put new heads, pistons and cylinders on to rebuild it. 500 miles later the cam went flat. If I were a betting man, your lifters and cams are probably whacked.
The only thing good is the case. |
