I just bought a 66 21 window with a type 3 transmission. However, the rear sits about three inches lower than the front because the rear swing axle doesn't have reduction boxes like the old axle. Also, it screws up the camber on the rear wheels. Does anyone know how to fix this or if there is kit. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

well easywriter, toydude is pushing his stock height beliefs on you before he even asked you any questions as to what you like.... i think this is an important question seeing that is your bus and not his, that being said.... it appears that the person that you bought your bus from had started to lower the bus and not finished the job. so do you like lowered busses? do you want your bus to be lowered? if you want stock height then you either as toydude said have to put a reduction box tranny back in it or convert it to irs. if you do want it lowered then reindex your springplates a little lower and that will get rid of your camber problem, get a pair of dropped spindles and pull a couple springs from the beam. you will then be sittin pretty even with straight rear wheels and be able to get out of the freakin slow lane. reduction box trannys are only good for one thing... going 55. good luck with your project. |

I don't want to start any flames here, but I highly recommend NOT pulling leafs from your front torsion beam. Yes, you will sit lower, but the ride will be terrible. Get adjusters and weld them in, or get an adjustable front beam along with the drop spindles if you want to go really low. Reposition your bump stops, dont remove them entirely.
As for the reduction housings, I agree with Rizzag11. I haven't tried a 3:88 tranny with reductions however. Any testimonials? I'm running IRS with a 3:88 in my '65 and it flys (75mph crusing). |

Hey guys,
this is [email protected] (thanks for replying). I want to keep it stock height. I absolutely do not want to put the old tranny in. So, what are my options (thanks rizzag)? |

The best way to lower the front for a smooth ride, is install lowered spindles but reazize that the stock spindle configuration have stops on them to make the steering "lock" when the wheel is turned all the way, they limit the amount you can turn it. If you use lowered spindles, which are really just stock spindles assembled "wrong" so they make the bus lower, you loose the function of the stops and now your "stop" is just is the steering box it self, I goes to the limit and thatt's the stop. NOt real good for the steering box. Lowered beams and adjusters all result in a bumpy ride, and do not try to lower buy removing any springs form the front axle. It makes the ride real stifff and bumpy. Your' basically stuck with the trans they put in unless youwant to spend money. You have two options. Put stock bus trans back in or have "Old Speed" do an IRS converstion which resutlst in stock height at the rear with IRS. THE kit's sold for this purpose are not made right and they don't allow for proper installation of the the swing arms. Call or email old speed and ask for russel He knows his stuff, They advertise in hot vw;s every isssue. |
