I need some Type2 help... I am a Type1 guy (or at least I was 10 years ago), and "Bug-itis" is starting to hit again. However, this time around I think a Crew Cab will make more sense. They just seem to be more convenient. The girl and I in the front seat, dog in the back seat, room in the bed for work material, and even a hitch for towing home that perfect Æ54 Ragtop Beetle that I will find someday. I just wanted to know from you guys what to look out for when purchasing a Type2. I know rockers rustà any other common places to look for rust? Any places where you would not want to see rust? I would also assume that gates are hard to come by. Any info you can provide to make my first purchase a good one would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to check out www.dropgates.com It's a truck only site and has a ton of great info on it. I would try to find a truck with decent corners, gates, and rockers if you can. The bumpers on trucks are specific also. Oh and make sure someone didn't cut the wheel wells to put bigger tires on because they can be a pain to fix. |

Dave, I would suggest looking under the rear seat/rear floorboard as DC's love to rust there and proceede down into the frame members. Floor,Gates and bed are prolly the top 3 considerations i think. corners and rockers can be repaired easily enough by a qualified body man as well as replacement parts for those are readily available. Yes gates are hard to come by in good condition, especially the early DC gates (pre mid-60)
The bumpers on a 62-67 DC are not truck specific. 59-61 bumpers had a slight "notch" on the inner side to clear the sharp truck corner (normal bus bumper can be altered without notice) but after 61 they changed the rear corners so the bumpers are the same as normal bus. Front bumpers are the same as normal bus for all years of DC production. |
