I friend of mine with a vintage single cab wrote me the following:
Anybody have an answer for this problem of mine? A year ago Peninsula replaced the oil cooler in Vernon, it had sprung a leak at the top seam and was drooling badly - it made a terrific mess of my clean engine and
compartment.
Today, the "new" cooler blew. This is one year - nearly exactly - and less than 100 miles after the replacement. I don't know for sure that it's the same problem but the symptoms are the same: massive oil loss on the left side, dripping off the heater box,
spraying all over the inside of the engine compartment, dripping down the inside of the engine lid. I was in Morgan Hill at the time, and drove him home. Only lost about a half a quart of oil so it looks worse than it is, probably.
Now the hard part: why is it doing this? They could not find a replacement 36hp oil cooler last year, so they put in a "good used" (and pressure-tested) cooler from a Porsche 912. I was not wild about this idea, as Dave told me it's slightly larger than my stock 36 cooler, but I figured they knew what they were doing. Now I'm wondering.
I want to make sure this gets done RIGHT this time so I don't have to take Vern back for a third trip to repair the same thing. Any suggestions from anyone?
(My only thought for her is that the pressure relief valve is stuck and not dumping the excess pressure. Can anyone back me up on this, or come up with another suggestion as to what might be happening?)
TIA, Steve E. |

Hi Steve, The oil cooler you are looking for is the same size used from the 36 horse through the 1600 single port motors. There should not be any problem finding the correct cooler either new or good used there are a lot of them out there. They are not specific to 36 horse motors unless you have a early 36 with a rounded top otherwise the same size cooler was used throughout. I would avoid a larger cooler as the cooling air has a hard enough time reaching the #3 cylinder with out taking up more space in the fan shroud. A stuck oil pressure relief valve should be looked into but I do not believe that it could cause the cooler to burst especialy in a 36 horse! Tim |
