|
|
When backing my 71 camper out of the garage, it felt like the emergency brake was on , and it wouldn't roll. It finally let loose as the clutch was released, with a clunck. The bus drove Ok for about a mile, but then when starting out in 1st gear from a stop light, it bunny hopped a little and then a loud clunk from the rear, and she was dead. The engine was still running and I could shift, but no drivetrain. What did I brake? |

sounds like you you either stripped the splines in one of your drums or a CV fell off.
or your trans is kaput. but lets hope for the best _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Had the bus been parked for a while with the brake set? I'll bet your parking brake locked up. I suggest removing the rear drums for cleaning and inspection. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Could be CV's or it could be time for a new clutch. I'd look at these as part of my diagnosis. _________________ *****************

threads like this should be a poll!
I vote CV came loose - have you looked underneath it yet? if it was CV it would be obvious.

Certainly easy to check for a stripped drum or busted CV. If those are all good then next would be something wrong with the pinon in the transaxle. |

71 has a forged flange like a late bay. Pretty hard to strip them. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Thanks all, for the quick responses. Just checked the CV's and the drivers side
CV is broken off from the drum. Can I re-install it, or is replacement the best option. Any other damage I should be looking for to the drum Etc? |

If it is just the bolts have backed out or sheared, then new bolts may fix your problem. You will need to clean everything well to make sure the mating surfaces and the holes and threads for the bolts are not damaged. |

make sure to put a new boot on it when you replace the cv. Rochford has some great ones. Or you could get the CV join and german boot at busdepot and pop it on. I recommend Rockford and German CVS.
heres Rockford boot

And at least repack the joint sine you are in there. If it were me, I would do all 4 of them since you are doing it anyway. I just hate for them to go bad in the middle of deep nowhere though.
Invest in new belleville washers (usually not included in the re-pack kits) and make sure you have all the torque spreaders. |

Each joint should have three plates under the bolt heads to spread the load onto the boot flange more evenly. The Belleville washers are the slightly curved washers that fit under the bolt heads but on top of the spreader plates.
The most important thing you can do (in my opinion) is to get the bolts tight enough. VW upped the recommended torque on the later Transporters (Vanagons) to 33 ft*lbs, IIRC. |

Time to remove both axles and go thru the 4 CV joints, maybe replace boots and probably get 24 new bolts and the special serrated washers. Then put it back together exactly per the book. If one failed the other 3 might also since it wasn't done right when they were put on before. _________________ 71 Superbug
