Stock they only get around 16mpg, best case.

I'd routinely get 18+mpg on my old wbx, FWIW.

18+ as a high or average?...I say 16 average.

I concur. We had an automatic 1987 Vanagon when I was in high school and it got 18 mpg when driven with a light foot and not much stopping at less than 65 mph. But throw some stop lights or hills into the equation and it was in the 16-17mpg range. That was with an almost new van, and it was a lightweight passenger version. I'm driving an automatic Carat around right now and it gets 15-17mpg.

I don't think 14.9 mpg during break-in, with winter ethanol blend gas and a heavy camper sounds that far off what I would expect.

You guys are probably burning our gasoline..no oil wells in Sweden.

According to the WSJ..we are swimming in the stuff and are sending it abroad. They must get get a better price from you guys than here at home.

[i]"The United States has become a major exporter of, get this — gasoline.

We sent abroad more 430,000 more barrels of refined gas, the stuff you get at the pump, than we imported in September, according to government data. That is more than double what it was at the beginning of this year, reports CNN.
:

That math is funny.
We import more than 9 million barrels a day of crude and produce about 5 million domestically. We have excess refining capacity so some of the product is sold to countries who may have oil, but no ability to refine.
Gas consumption alone is over 9 million barrels (378,000,000 gal) per day.
That 430,000 difference is for the whole month of Sept. So yeah, we are exporting .16 % of the gas refined in this country. I don't think that's enough supply to affect price at the pump.

(Don't forget who owns WSJ)

Reported by CNN too.

If the price of wheat almost tripled in three years, and the peasants could not afford bread, then for the first time in sixty years the government started exporting wheat..you would have the French Revolution. Here in the USA..we shrug it off?

I think 15mpg with a new WBX engine..and being sorted out with an automatic transmission is OK.

I was averaging around 17mpg on the previous engine, would drop to ~16.4 if I did primarily my office commute (6 miles each way.. yeah, I know the WBX needs to be driven for more). On highway runs at around 60mph, I'd keep to 18.5-19mpg.

I guess time will tell if you get your old mileage or not.
I would plan on a 16mpg average no matter how or where you drive.

When there is a change in the fuel economy you have to look at what has changed with the vehicle.

Assuming the same injectors, ECU, FPR, fuel brand, tire pressures and so forth are the same. Assuming the injection and ignition system are correctly set up and assuming the fuel octane needs are correctly based on 10c's experience with his WBX engine..then there is no other answer.

The engine uses some additional fuel.

I personally believe (regret to disagree with the builder) it will take some miles to bed the engine in and not to be overly concerned. I don't think your WBX is settled in yet. Modern engine oils have a load of friction modifiers and additives that do a great job lubricating an engine. It also takes more time to break-in the well built hand finished 10c WBX engine as a result.

I don't think you have a problem.

That's where this gets really complex. Along with the new engine came new injectors, new FPR, new plugs, new exhaust, etc. So there's a lot of changes going on. I'm still speculating I'll get better econ once I get the air/fuel mix re-adjusted.

Now that you've had a summer to play, were you able to get the gas mileage worked out? How's everything running? Does the engine pull up hills the way you expected?

Are there any sound clips of a Tencent engine with the ss exhaust? I heard a very poor quality one but would like to hear what it sounds like with a good quality sound or movie clip.

On your first question, yes, my fuel economy has been "solved". Smile

We just completed a 2,044 mile trip in Montana, which mostly consisted of highway/backroad (50mph+) driving, with the occasional jaunt up/down a forest service road or through a city.

My average fuel economy for the entire trip was 18.76mpg, worst tank being 16.75mpg (mostly driving around Missoula for a few days). This included driving countless mountain passes, crossing the continental divide a few times, etc. So, yes, I think my fuel economy has been fixed. Smile

Hill pulling - yes, no problem. We went up to Big Sky (elevation 8200') and it pulled right up. Slow going (thin air compared to my usual 200' elevation), but 2nd gear was able to keep us going at 45mph.

(remember: this is an automatic transmission)

How did it do?
I find myself on that stretch in my 1990 stock 2.1 WBX Syncro Westy.
Going westbound, I'm down to 35mph, back and forth between 2nd and 3rd..
Going east bound I can keep 40-45, just until the tunnel, then have to downshift.

I'd be very curious to hear how a bandstand fares in that section of highway.

DeadSetMonkey, I bought Ddubsghia Van a few months ago. I threw back a few cold ones in Boulder after the paperwork was signed, and hit the road for SF the next day. 2 days later I was home and still giddy with delight, and it only got better with the thicker air at sea level. Even more power. Here is a video I took going up past Vail. I was in 4th gear. It dipped down to around 61-58mph, but it never really fell below those numbers, and I could feel it pulling the whole time. I kept saying aloud, "It's pulling!" like Frankenstein was alive in my van Smile I had to downshift to 3rd at the summit, but only for a little bit. Both the engine and Chris are amazing. I feel sooooo lucky to have swooped up a van with such a low mileage Vanistan. I still pinch myself.

If you are thinking about the Vanistan route, you won't be disappointed, that's for sure.

Cheers!

Sounds very promissing.
Was that van in the video a Westy? A syncro?

Mr. Beta,

After owning the van for a while what mileage are you getting, and what tire size/gearing are you running?

Thanks

Some info here but you gotta look for it, like panning for gold.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=60

I put my Ben Beaudrault rebuilt 2.1 in using the Bentley as a guide, coming to The Samba for answers to specific questions.

Search in "Title Only" helps find bite-size chunks of info.
