Can someone explain how this AC works in the adventurewagen?
There is an overhead plenum, but what is inside that?
I had an AW once and there was only the in-dash unit, not this overhead thing. Is there actually an evaporator and blower in this thing?
Notice it terminates just behind the front seats...
Thanks!

It looks like a tin top AC, wonder is someone chopped a tin top to install the AW _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Hmm, one more picture of the actual rear of the unit would help. But, it almost seems like a cut off Tin Top A/C unit that DOESN'T have the Evap blower still there since it was chopped off, at least from the side view. To still have the Blower and Evaporator, you would need a bit more housing past the Front Seats. And you'd see the air intake of the Evaporator as a large grill at the very rear of the unit. I can only see a couple of vents.
Here is a view of our Vanagon, looking forward. You can see the Ceiling /Roof Mounted A/C in the far end of the picture.

Here's a side view of the A/C unit. Notice how far it is behind the front seats.

Yeah, this picture (top right) shows a nice wooden trim on that cut plenum but no evap.

Right above the front bulkhead is where the entire AC unit lives in the Adventurewagen. All the parts are inside a wooden box inside the bulkhead, where two of the fans pull air into the evaporator and blow it down into a hole where it eventually comes out of the beautiful rear woodwork, and front vents by the windshield.
Here it is before I disassembled mine (the top wooden cover is removed here already):
With the entire box removed, you can see where the fans blow down into:
Evaporator inside the wooden cabinet (pictured without the two fans):
If you need more pics I can try to dig up some more just let me know. _________________ 1979 Bay Window 2.0 FI

Now I'm just curious what is actually in there....
If there's no blower at all, why didn't AdventureWagon just remove the A/C unit from the ceiling/roof. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

See the very helpful post above from lovine made at the same time.
Lovine that is very helpful. Bummer to lose the storage there and looks like an effective place for the evap.
Any pictures of the roof penetration?

Ha! This is perfect, exactly what I wanted to know.
I'd had an AW long time ago and it only had the in-dash unit.
There must have been different options delivered.
Good to know! |
