|
|
Ive bin driving it for a few weeks and its bin hard changing into 3rd and 4th. then on a ride back from vanc at a stop light the gear box popped. and suddenly it was hard to get into 1st and easy to get into 3rd and 4th. Noooow i drove it like 5km down the road and then changing from 1st to 2nd pulling away it made a big snappy kind of noice. and the gear stick can only find 1st and 3rd if im lucky. and it is soo loose and floppy. Im only 19 and moved away from england a month ago on my own to live in canada and now im f**ked with this camper.
Any advice im pretty stuck right now |

Try doing a search for "shifter plate". See about adjusting that and if that's not it try a search for "shift coupler". It's probably an easy fix. |

they can do that. Its the nature of 30 year plus vehicle. Find a good mechanic, take deep breather and reach into walet. That or send it to me. I will pay shipping she can F*@ct me all she wants. _________________ Special Thanks to:

Shift coupler is shot. Replace it. Use the new bushings with the original German cage. 10 minute job. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Soooo.... when you lay under the centerline of the bus (engine off, brake on) at the front of the transmission (just ahead of the back wheels) and a buddy puts it in first gear and shoves the gear shift side to side while you look up for moving parts does the shift rod (shaft coming from the front of the bus) and the hockey stick (shaft emerging from the transmission) both move exactly the same?, or does one move significantly more than the other?
Keep your fingers clear, your buddy has alot of leverage up there _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You can just buy bushings. I bought a cage and bushings from aircooled.net recently because they were out of just bushings on their own. I ended up using the bushings from it on my standard cage. I had every intent of swapping the cage but the grub screw on my old coupler was sheared off which stopped me dead. Couldn't have been bothered messing around with that at the time. The old cage was still tight anyway. Just the bushings that were sloppy. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). I just inspected the coupler and it looks all good. took out one bushing and it seemed. fine. Had a look below the shifter and there are no shift rod bushings? _________________ If the vans a 'rockin' dont come a 'knockin'

Definitely not the coupler. Sounds like bad syncros in the trans itself. Disconnect the shift rod and coupler, and try to dry shift the trans with a pair of vise grips. If it doesn't dry shift, it's f**ked. Also, you said it popped out of gear. It's proper f**ked.
Time to buck up for a rebuilt trans |

Nope it never popped out of gear when driving. I went over a speed bump now i remeber and then when i changed gear i couldnt find any. Checked it today and there are no shifter bushings so i ordered them and new coupler bushings. Fingers crossed! _________________ If the vans a 'rockin' dont come a 'knockin'

Hope you bought a quality shift coupler. The EMPI quality ones are trash. Worth the extra bucks to go with something better. I bought cheap ones when my OEM ones went out on the road. They were so junky they were not worth the install. Ended up using the new plastic inserts and embedding them in polyurethane caulk in the old coupler to give them a tight fit. Places like CIP1 sell several different grades of couplers, I would at least avoid the lowest grade.
Often it is the metal part of the cheap couplers that fail. You might consider doing what I did and using the new plastic inserts in the OEM metal piece. Hopefully if you go this way yours will fit sufficiently tight. |

I bought the inserts from aircooled.net they were only 7 bucks? My metal coupler seems fine and inshape! Im praying that sorting these lil problems will help with my big problem cheers _________________ If the vans a 'rockin' dont come a 'knockin'

Coming up with the insert alone is a cool find. Assuming they fit well that should be a good way to go. |

It is. As I said I had to get the cage too because they were out. the cage looks pretty good too. Any reason why I shouldn't try to remove the damaged screw to fit it? The urethane bushes were an amazing fit in it, as they were the OE cage. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Hopefully the bearing for the 1+2 gear shaft didn't seize and is pulling out of the recess. |
