|
|
Hello Everyone,
I've searched the forums and found lots of info about the M26 emissions system on the '69+ Bugs. Has anybody ever modified their pre-67 gas tank for this?
I have a '64 w/a 1600dp engine and the complete German engine tin, including the shroud w/the pipe for the hose to the charcoal canister. I would like to modify my tank for the evaporation canister.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!! |

X3
I would block off the pipe/hose.
I thought that 100% would either leave emission in or remove it.
Now I have to say 99.9%; because I heard of a guy on samba wanting to add emission to a none emission vehicle.

x4... why..
My only guess is to try and capture any lost fuel vapor from the tank.... to burn, and conserve a few vapors for later use?
It's surely not for saving the environment, or you'd park that ole polluting VW.
So whats your reasoning for the wanted upgrade/downgrade. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

There is no reason it can't be done, but the subtleties of pipe size, charcoal capacity, etc, make engineeing a retrofit system an iffy proposition. "Iffy" and "flammable gases" is not a combo I'd like to experiment with.
I would just plug the shroud pipe with a rubber stopper or cap. That's what I did on my 40 HP motor when I put a later doghouse shroud on it.

Should be easy if you really want to do it. All the canister does is capture the vapors.
put a small hose on the current vent in the filler neck and route it to the back near where you choose to mount the canister, right rear wheel well?, so you can run the large hoses to and from the engine. You might need to modify your air cleaner, depending on which one you are using.
What a boring world it would be if we were all the same _________________ Rick

Well, you're all right of course. Volkswagnut - I probably should park it given how inefficient this little motor is no matter what you do to it. And i do want to capture those vapors, not for fuel efficiency but to try and reduce my little polluter's impact on the environment, minor though that reduction will be. And I do want to try and reduce the presesnce of those nasty carcigonenic fumes in the passenger compartment everytime i fill up the tank.
And, well, it gives me something to do to my Bug!
60ragtop - i would do as you describe, mount it at the rear wheel well and run the fat hoses to my Mexican air filter, which has the connection for the hose to the canister. What about the evaporator that these systems had in the front? I was thinking of adding one of those as well, but the later bugs had two hoses going from the canister to the gas tank. No place for those on this tank.
Thanks for all of the input pro & con! |

The original vent line would not cause this-- it vents below the car, not into the trunk. An evap system won't fix this.
You probably have a leaky gas cap, or a leaky rubber boot on the fuel gauge sender. |

Then plan on also replacing your muffler with a Catalytic Converter.
Here is your problem, and the problem with your thinking.
Your fumes in the trunk each time you fill is understandable, and unless you modify your tank unavoidable. The fumes still rise and pour out of the neck and into the trunk as you fill the tank with liquid. You would have to restrict down your softball size filler neck, and install an newer OBVRS On Board Vapor Recovery System, to avoid less fumes from being emitted from the tank during fueling. Thats about the only way. The OBVRS, uses a fuel tank with a narrow fuel neck, that when filled, provides a liquid seal, and any vapors displaced are displaced into the canister.
The normal vent on your current system that is routed outside the vehicle, is for expansion and contraction, found normally while driving, and parking, as well as providing a relief for excess pressure, and vacuum. With this you would/should only smell a little fumes, outside, and not inside if routed properly.
If the only reason to add a canister is to dampen, the smell of gas after filling... its not going help.. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

| Would it hurt? Help at all? How about what 60ragtop suggested, just running the line back to the charcoal canister and making the connections to the air filter? |

Hurt ?
Nope, but its not going to fix your complaint.
Help at all?
Nope...
Only if you modify your fuel neck, or block the neck to only vent through a rerouted larger vent and into a canister can it help. The stock size vent cant handle it...and isnt large enough to handle rapid filling. . You have to displace all the empty space of fumes rapidly at nearly the same pace, as you're filling. Newer cars with OBVRS displaces those fumes into the canister. Thats its purpose, fume storage. It stores the fumes, then is purged when the engine is running later.
Later models use 2 vents for faster venting, and easier fume flow to the canister, plus they have an unleaded fuel restrictor.
What size is the fuel nozzle.? approx 3/4"
What size it the filler neck? Approx 3 inches.
Lots of space for the fumes to roll out...
Those fumes are coming out and spilling into your trunk.
You smell fumes as soon as you close the hood and they migrate...
You are taking a very simple car and complicating it, but if you really want to improve it, anything can be improved. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Then again You may fit in better than you think...
Probably one or two in just about every trunk in town..  _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}
