1960 deck lid stuck closed

I own a 1960 beetle and the deck lid latch T handle turns but doesn't release, so I can't get in my engine compartment. Any ideas on how to get it to release so I can get to my engine?

The sliding hook most likely turned too far and went off track. I would suggest pulling the deck lid and handle downward while simultaneously trying to open it. I hope that makes sense

I got in! I taped back the rear deck lid seal under the handle and could see the lock / hook part. I got a stiff wire bent into a hook and was able to pull it down while moving the handle. It seems it'll do that only if I twist the handle too far. So greased it and closed it again. I'll keep that wire in my glove box! Lol
