I'm thinking i will be picking up a '61 bus in the near future. It is missing its transmission axles etc in the rear. I want to jack it up and make it a roller again to help with retrieval. I have a trans drum to drum but dont know what it is from or if it will fit. I dont think it is a bus trans because it does not have reduction boxes. Looks like beetle or ghia? Just dont know. How can i tell?

You need to find a core MAY59 thru 67 bus transaxle. The one you have looks like a wide five Beetle.
Now is the time to figure out if you are going to restore the bus or want the 64-67 bus transaxle with bigger better brakes, and upgrade the fronts to boot.
After you get it home, decide if you want to have your used transaxle stock geared or rebuilt and geared for the higher speeds you need to do today with a freeway flier transaxle. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Not without a lot of modifying, adapting, fabrication, and by then you will have way more time and $$ than to just buy a core bus transaxle.
If you have a flat trailer to put it on, you could build a bracket and single caster wheel to get it up on the trailer.
For that check out the factory designed "Local Manufacture of Workshop Equipment" blueprints @

No. The spring plates wont bolt up to the axle end castings. |
