After seeing what they asked for those in the photos, I built my own for a fraction of the cost.
He deleted the original classified.

Of course it was a fraction of the cost. Did you pay the workers a decent hourly wage? Pay any taxes or provide health insurance? Was adequate time put into R&D to productionalize the product in a profitable way?
That said, do you have some photos of your DIY build? _________________ - Jim

Guilty as charged.

I'm be curious to know how much weight that fiberglass top can support? That roof cant be light, plus the weight of additional stuff you carry up top....
The classified add has this installed on a tintop. _________________ 87 VW Westfalia - EJ25

*Exactly* my thought.
I cut a custom-fit 2x3 to help support our roof front and center — even though nothing’s up there anymore. There’s no question it’s saved fiberglass cracking and poptop hardware many, MANY times.

My experience is that the roof can support far more weight than should be up there or that can be easily lifted. Years ago I had four bars, a full box and full-length basket (mainly for carrying wet things). I had to add 150 psi gas springs to have any chance of lifting it single-handedly (before that it required two people). It was an exercise in excess and the roof did fine until I reversed the madness.
The Yakima racking is steel and probably quite a bit heavier than Syncrohead's rack.

Plan on losing *at least* 10% mpg with a roof box. This came from 61 months of daily use.
Also plan on a considerable raising of center-of-gravity. Think “teeter-totter.”
Best advice on almost every system in these vans is to live without — or buy a Sprinter. _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

It looks like Bostig is building one. Quite expensive (at least to me), but really nice! They're claiming a max 1800 lbs capacity.
https://www.bostig.com/bostig-gunny-rack-system/
EDIT, I just noticed, it seems to be for tin-tops.
I'll leave this post for info purposes. _________________ Currently:

Yea, my question sidetracked the OP question.... :/
If using this large of roof rack on a fiberglass top I would assume the brackets that also place some weight on the rain gutter would be better suited or less of a risk of cracking. _________________ 87 VW Westfalia - EJ25

I think this has been hashed out quite a bit on this site with the "consensus" being that the roof itself is very stout, but the roof struts and the the operator's shoulder strength being the limiting factor.
My canoe weighs 80 LBS and and has travelled without any problem on the roof of my Westy for over 10 years. I no longer risk stressing my struts by popping my roof with the boat on top but have ZERO reservations loading the boat onto the roof for travel.
That roof rack doesn't weigh squat. What do you intend to put on it?

It is important to point out that OPs photo has the CVC artificial rain gutter brackets that put the weight on the rain gutter when closed. With those, I feel comfortable carrying 100lbs+ in my cargo box/roof rack. Now opening it is another story
Edit. actually it only looks like those are on the front brackets. _________________ "Jo Ann" - '83.5 Westfalia EJ22e w/Peloquin

yes, see other posts. My brother, the licensed/ coded welder, didn't complain about the cash he made either. Fortunately we're all gainfully employed and double or tripe insured . _________________ 83 Air-cooled 2.0 Tin Top |

Go, DIY! This forum largely exists and thrives from that.
I also find it a little ironic that so many claim to have concern for the health of US businesses and workers, then turn right around and promote buying everything from Amazon and Wal-Mart, and link sales of crap probably made by little kids.
Clarifying, too… the issue with weight on the fiberglass roofs isn’t so much about risks when closed, but rather when open and subject to crosswinds. _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

Well this went way off topic
Im well aware of weight concerns with fiberglass yall, and jack bombey pop top struts are my go to (mark is the best!)
I simply love the look, and how lights are mounted. Just a cool design is all.
Yall may continue your convo about how quality, cost, yada yada and fiberglass bending yada yada. I got my answer. Someone else can takeover this thread now _________________ Im a Mobile Aircooled VW mechanic, and work on old and new cars alike. Specialty in Camper busses/Vans, TDI, and FI diagnosis and repair.
