I was told at airhead parts that the gas filler DOES NOT go into the gas tank. There's supposed to be a gap, and the black rubber hose is what links the gas filler to the gas tank. However, on my car, I have to put the gas filler into the tank for things to fit.

See the pic, the rubber band area on the end of the filler has to go into the gas tank in order for me to get the filler in enough to close the door (I moved the rubber band area further back, but just imagine here). As things are pictured now, the filler sticks out of the gas door, and the little nozzle the big hose goes on isn't even in enough to go on!
So I'm confused after getting conflicting info. This is a 74 Super, anyone know what is right? I don't think my filler neck got longer since it's been out of the car Razz

Excuse the French, but something is fucked up here. Are you missing #11, a flexhose? Post a picture of the entire assembly.

Mine sort of fits like that, but I have the flexhose hose over it (slid over both ends) and clamped down. On my car end of the metal filler pipe still slides into the opening in the gas tank, though.

I have the flex hose, but my problem is I'm told the flex hose is supposed to connect the filler with the tank, yet on my car the filler is long enough to go in the gas tank and I don't really need the flex hose except as a vapor seal.

Actually, I believe the way it is supposed to work is that you have one rubber band on the tank end and one on the filler (sits up where the other end of the rubber pipe would end). It is not used as a seal where the filler slides into the tank (Yes it does go into the tank). It is not used to seal the two pipes (that was my first thought too), it is used to seal the rubber pipe that joins the two together. One should end up on either end of the rubber pipe approximately where each clamp is. At least that is how I wound up putting mine and that is what my searching showed me IIRC.

A '74 super should look like this.

Yes and the rubbers bands should be under the rubber pipe at each clamp. Mine looks the same as the one pictured too

Exactly, bands under each end of the hose.

Yes, the filler tube fits inside the tank. Someone gave you a bum steer.

Question here. Is the easiest way to install the new hose to take the tank and the filler tube out of the car, join them while out, and then install it all as one unit and reinstall the rubber grommet on the filler door area? I'm having a hell of a time trying to so it while in the trunk. I do have the tank loose and partially out, but things just don't want to slide together with out massive force. Just looking for a pointer here.

I installed mine by putting the tank in, putting the rubber over the tank's fill hole, and then twisting the fill nozzle into the rubber hose. Had to do alot of twisting and pushing, but it was easy to grip to get working.

Thanks for the hint. I'm going to give it a go again in the morning. My frustration level got the best of me today so I walked away from it for the evening.

Thanks again.

Vinnems, thanks for the sequence tip. Used motor oil instead of WD a s another guy suggested, and worked in the order you gave and I had it done in like 10 mins. Thanks again everyone. Very Happy
