I don't have a pic handy, but yes the back of the 64 back seat back was just a vinyl cover all the way around. The seats changed in 65 and I believe thats when they went to the hard back that was covered with carpet.

The back of the rear seatback in my 113 64 is a cardboard material and is painted gray. It all original.

Well then I stand corrected. I didn't think they put the hard backs prior to 65. Good thing to know when I go to do the int in my wife's 64 since its gutted.

Seats were changed in 65 (for the Deluxe Sedan) to provide a more flat fold of the rear seat, hence the articulating fiberboard, in the rear. These also had a metal strip at the top of the rear seat back to secure the fiberboard, as well as a tuck strip in on the rear shelf.
But I think (fairly sure) 63/64 rear seats had some type of thin fiberboard as its back...It was basically placed in the rear seat back cavity for appearence.
Convertibles were different, more finished and refined..

According to the 63/64 owners manual they are the same but the 62 had a vinyl back.
Im sure someone will post who may know without doubt, or are eager to show there knowledge...

From the 1964 owners manual..

I just recovered my rear seat in my '64 ( Oct '63 )

There was no board backing, the new cover just went over the seat material , prior owner had a saran wrap material over the top area to make the cover slide down easier, massaged and stretched the cover and hooked on the spikes at the bottom.

OK here are a few pics... dark outside, but should give you an idea.
