Hi
Does anyone have a thread/ post that goes through each step to tear down a 36 hp? Anything that has pictures and detailed steps? Im thinking it isn't exactly lke a 1600 tear down and rebuild.
Thanks |

You would have to search for the thread if it exists.
I used the Wilson book on rebuilding VW engines and cross referenced it with the VW shop manual when I did my type 4 engine along with serious study here on threads dealing with specific parts of the build.
I would do the same on a 36 hp, and the advantage I have on it is owning an original shop manual although I hear the Bentley reprint is good too. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

The 36hp rebuild articles from VW Trends are very good; I just completed mine using this and it was very helpful. The only thing is in section 4 step 15 where he says to leave the thermostat bolt loose and worry about tightening it later, I couldn't get to the bolt later with my heater boxes installed; had to reach in with needle nose pliers and I don't think I got it as tight as I'd like. I think next engine I will raise the tstat bracket as far as it goes and tighten it down, then after I install the air control ring, adjust the ring to it's 20mm spacing and I'm done. I searched for air control ring adjustment and found that procedure somewhere. Good luck with your rebuild. byron _________________ 1957 Oval Window

| That procedure on the thermostat bracket is misleading and the bracket the article shows is wrong. There is no adjustment on the correct 36hp bracket, it all happens at the control ring. |

Mine only moved quarter inch or so; I figured that was what he was talking about. I noticed my bracket wasn't exactly like the one in the article. Is it because he was working on a 54 engine? Thanks for the info. Byron _________________ 1957 Oval Window
