My car was running then it just shut off. The problem, no spark. Ive got power fron the ignition switch to the coil but that is as far as it goes. I have no idea how old the coil is so I was going to replace it anyway and electronic ignition is the next logical step, so my question. Which electronic ignition works best in a 034 distributor? Thanks Mike. |

How did you measure this?
If you left everything connected and the points were CLOSED... taking a voltage measurement from the coil (-) terminal will show zero voltage. If you disconnect the gree point wire from the coil (-) terminal you can THEN measure voltage at the (-) terminal.
While the points are CLOSED, the resistance to ground is so LOW thru the points that very little current will flow through the test equipment (zero volts). Disconnect the green wire and test again. You will probably find the same voltage as on the (+) terminal. _________________ AshMan40

Yeah, throwing parts at a problem will only work if you get lucky. In the end though, you'd end up frustrated. Time to work the problem through logically. Then go to a new coil if needed, or electronic ignition if you want. But let's see what we can do with what you have.
How do the points look? Do they operate correctly? A co-worker of mine recently had the rubbing block fall of the set of point in his distributor recently.
A quick and dirty check of the points would include a test lamp and a helped. Disconnect the green wire and connect a test lamp to the green wire and the ignition wire. When the engine is cranked the lamp should flash indicating the points (really nothing more than a timed switch) is working at a basic level. Let's go from there. |

No it's not. I've seen a number of them fail in recent years and i've also seen fitment issues. _________________ Glenn

I'm simply basing this off of my experience on all my water and air cooled cars that Ive installed these into. If hooked up correctly, and with the right part, I've never had issues. Plus, I think it also says something when John at aircooled.net sells these products and stands behind them. Not bashing points, but based on the temperamental logic around here I should because I've had a rubbing block brake off a set of Bosch points and it left me stranded _________________ Current: 2023 ID.4 Pro S, 2020 Golf TSi 1.4L, 2017 GTI S, 6 spd man, 76 Bus, 2.0L- 3 spd auto
