|
|
Hello folks,
Can anyone tell me anything about the extra bar that goes across my front and rear bumpers of my '65? The bumpers are original to the car and I believe the bar has been on the car since new, although I assume they are aftermarket. A marking on the backside says GT 64.
Thanks.

Correct, it is attached with bolts through the bumper guards. Other than the GT 64 marking, I don't see any VW or other manufacturer markings. I'm guessing it is an early EMPI accessory. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

normally you dont have to drill holes , you use existing holes so i duno whats up ?
go measure the distance between the rear bumper bolts n see if that matches . |

They are the earlier Empi bars. And yes, offered at dealerships. A buddy has a '65 ruby bug as well that has those listed on the window as accessory bumper guards.
They are as you may have guessed, simply small car leaf springs that have been chromed. They have slots for the mounting bolts to allow energy absorption. Don't overtighten the bolts or you lose that 3mph feature. _________________

I knew you'd come through, Brad! I hadn't picked up on the leaf spring, but definitely see it now. Now I'll be able to impress people at the next show with that bit of trivia. Thanks. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |
