I can't find much info on this. . . .
My buggy currently doesn't have an E-brake, and its about time to install one. Can't I just install two E-brake handles, hook one to the right Ebrake cable, and the other to the left, and use them for turning brakes?
I know it won't be as strong as hydraulic brakes, but would it still work? Or is it worth it to buy the hydraulic turning brakes? _________________ My 4 Seater 1835cc Build page

The mechanical turning brakes are just teasers. They work for a bit, but are weak and likely will break the cables if you really like them. True sand will overpower them, but they are happy in mud.
I have them still on my old school Baja and they are OK. Mostly they work to minimize wheel spin and to get out of a mud hole.
My buggy came with a hydraulic unit, I have replaced it a time or two over the years, and I put a hydraulic one in my new school Baja. It works much better on the Buggy though. The Buggy steers better with the brake than the steering in deep sand [paddle tires and smoothies, the whole deal], not so for the Baja [normal off road tires and much heavier front end].
The hydraulics are great, worth the price for sure. They may even be at cost parady if you need to run all new cables and such for the mechanical ones.

Yes the mechanical steering brake will work, just not as well a hydrualic steering brake does.
We used the mechanical in the early 70s until switch to hydrualic ones.
Big different in how hard you have to pull/push handle.
Also because VW brakes are not self energizing (stationary brake adjusters) the forward shoe will wear out faster. Not a problem if you check your brakes every so often.
I had people tell I wrong on this, but I speak from experience.
Have fun and you will enjoy having the ability to be able lock up a wheel to gain traction in the mud. _________________ Joseph

Here is how I set up my poor mans turning brakes in my Baja.
Two separate handles with the stock ebrake handle underneath so I can still have a parking brake. I will only use it to get un-stuck. No sand in West Virginia.
