Hi ya'll,

To start ,I'm extremely green to the world of mechanics. I noticed both outside rear axle boots are open in my 84 Vanagon. So, when looking at each boot from beneath the rear axle I can see the grease in each one. I believe they are supposed to be sealed. My question: What should I do from here? Do I need to have the CV joint looked at because the boot has been open for I'm-not-sure-how-long? The grease appears clean in each one.
Thanks, Jesse

You need to remove the axles and replace the boots and repack the grease in the CV's.
That's the only way around it! Sorry!

Jesse,

I did both my axles on my '85 without too much trouble and I'm pretty green also.

Took me an evening and it was like $80/axle from my Baxters.

Remember to take your time and clean off the old axle bolt heads. Its a pain, but it makes loosening them much easier. I replaced all of them w/ the GW 12 point bolts which I think are easier to handle than the factory 6mm allens.

Also break the bolts loose all at once and THEN start pulling the bolts, otherwise its hard to loosen them with the axle spinning.

Prepare for ALOT of dirty grease. Its messy, but easy.
