fuel tap positions '55

I bought a new fuel tap and installed it. I noticed that the lever turns all the way to the left and middle(top) and right. Isn't it supposed to be straight up and down with reserve in the middle?

If you have a 56 year model (built from Aug 55 on), then you need the later fuel tap which only turns 90°.

oops duh! I had it on the off position. No wonder it wouldn't start. I totally took my carb off thinking that was the problem.
