Still looking....
Test drove a Westy today that was making a HMMMMM Whiiinnnnning noise when accelerating in all gears. The owner said is goes away after a while, but we drove the van for a good half hour on city streets and freeway and it didn't.
I know this is a broad question but any ideas what it could be... tel-tale sign of a gearbox getting ready to go or something as benign as changing out the gear box oil?
Thanks |

If its singing under load only?
Transmission rebuld in the near future.
Mine (manual) is beginning to do this... in 2nd gear mostly.
Might be something really simple though, too.
Could be losse bellhousing bolt(s).. or something loose, laying in cintact on the case making a resonant hum.

Ditto
Dose the HMMMMMMMMMM change pitch with engine RPM or with the speed of the Van? Or is it constant. _________________ A sad looking 88 Westfalia, MT 2.1 with 150k on the clock and several issues! |

Only happened when it was under load, when we coasted it was not there. And it did change pitch when we spooled up to a higher speed. I didn’t back the van up and will do that when I go back to get a better look at it. At idle it is not there either
Thanks for bringing up wheel bearing; I remember the bearings on my boat trailer making a similar sound, but this would have been present when we coasted as well..
Thanks |

When mine were making noise the pitch didn't change with engine load or rpm. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

Mine has always had that noise. It does it at certain RPM's when accelerating, decelerating, and when just revving the engine. I always thought it was a normal engine noise....could be an alternator, AC, or power steering pump going bad though? What should a stock 2.1 sound like? |

Could tell ya! I was in my work clothes (Brooks Bothers) and couldn't get under the van or start ripping into it for a closer inspection. |

Kinda sounds to me like pinion bearing in the trans.
Is it most pronounced in 1st and 2nd ? _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Fuel Pump. Stick your head under the van just inboard of the sliding door. If it is the fuel pump it'll be obvious as to where it is coming from. If it is the fuel pump the bigger question is why is it buzzing? Clogged filter? Why is it clogged? Crud in a 25 year old fuel tank? Real good possibility. _________________ NAHT hightop availability May 18 2023 -
