Hmmm I’m a bit confused as to whether this part is correct or not…. The lda was rebuilt by the PO and he has rubber spacer and metal that’s been twisted badly to get the lda shaft to match with the ball of this lever…..in looking at a couple of pics online this doesn’t look like the same lever as what other “Jx’s” have.. Thanks! Dave

So it looks like you have an 1.6td that was swapped with a AAZ engine, and the old 1.6td bits were used. Correct? Something looks odd about that LDA setup, the pivot is different.
Photo from your gallery:
I had a '89 Syncro Tristar that had that conversion. Here's what the 1.6td pump looked like:
You can see on mine how they bent the injector pipes to fit the taller AAZ head.
On yours they bent the crap out of the LDA rod for some reason.
I ended up getting an actual AAZ pump, pipes, and injectors, but in my case because it was a Doka it had the extra headroom to allow the AAZ LDA.See how it sticks up.
You can use an AAZ pump in a Vanagon, but a notch has to be cut into the engine lid for clearance.
NOTE: I don't know much about diesels, hopefully one of the diesel experts will be around soon! _________________ Currently:

Thanks for the pics! Yep… that looks completely different! I wonder if that could explain the issues I’ve been having from day one…. I’ve been chasing ,what seems to me as a timing issue…. And have been repairing so many different things.. from broken injector bracket bolts to one tooth off on the timing belt. To 135psi injectors with broken nozzles to fuel filters full of mud… to bad cylinder head to what I hope to be the last piece of the puzzle……….

That LDA lever is some custom fabricated stuff.
Probably for more fuel on boost.
BTW the rod of the canister is bent on the pic MsTaboo posted. It should be straight. _________________ Zoltan

That pic is actually of my set up…. It is bent! That’s why I posted. Lol anyway I have more issues than that lever…. As I was manually running the throttle and the lda. Fuel started leaking from the pump where the that lever attaches… so that is probably if not definitely at least one issue with this pump… that bent rod probably, no, definitely wore that seal out. I think this pump is just shot…. Time for an upgrade….

So, I timed my injector pump at 1.00mm and drives a very thin mark denoting its place. Drove that and the van felt anemic at best… struggles on the slightest of hills…. I have stock boost… I then moved pump to both advance and retard in several tiny increments marking each movement I made. It actually makes no difference ar all..except for when I retard the pump it blows out more black smoke than usual. fuel filter was changed last week. All air is out and of course now I see an air bubble has formed on the fuel side…

Just FYI, my old 1.6td pump is in the classifieds - check my ads. If interested send me a PM. _________________ Currently:

For further reference here is my AAZ (1.9TD) custom injection pump with low profile aneroid that fits under the deck lid:
It is built with the JX horizontal aneroid. Note that the taller head with taller injectors required bent tubes that couldn't be tied down with the rubber dampers.
I would just warn that the alignment of the aneroid rod in this arrangement is critical that it doesn't bind. I mounted a video camera on a magnet while I drove with the lid off to get a visual on what the boost system was doing under full power. I had to mount the aneroid up on spacers (as shown) to get the rod aligned properly for full stroke. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit

this
id sort the linkage bits and send that off to Giles or someone for a rebuild
air in the lines after running could, possibly, be the pump. and its odd that youre not noticing any difference after the timing changes. |

Just a bit of an update: I opened up the injection pump just to see how it functions and it was corroded… the cam plate looked good but everything else was pitted. All the pieces were worn and pitted and looked like someone had opened it previously since the o-rings were glued in place and evidence of stripped bolts….. looks like a new pump is in store…
