See if you can use a screwdriver in-between the bolt to gently pry apart clamp. _________________ 1972 Bus 1700 cc Single Carb. But not a progressive.

Wish I still had the ones I got rid of.

Spray wd-40 under the clamp, so it wicks down the distributor shaft. On that shaft is a rubber seal that dries out and gets stuck.
Good luck

Some of the replacement distributor shaft o-rings are a bit oversize from OG and require some muscle to get the shaft in the hole. That might be a contributing factor. Loosening the nut and prying the clamp wider will probably solve the problem. Don't take the nut off and lose the special screw.
Probably time for a new fan belt. Buy two and keep a spare.

You'll bend the clamp.
Get a strap wrench.

That tool was useless for holding a Vanagon water pump pulley to remove the bolts from the pulley. It took a real strap wrench from NAPA for that job.

The pulley strap wrench is expensive and the one pictured by Glenn may be adequate for the distributor.

Spray it up as mentioned. If the engine has been clean with no oil film for a long time and experienced some corrosion because of this, the distributor can seize very tightly into the case. You can made a wooded punch with which to apply force the the "bilge" of the distributor and maybe jar the dizzy body a bit to break the corrosion loose. Very light sideways taps against the vacuum can may help as well, but don't get carried away here, do use wood between your hammer and the can and go easy. |

A tangential strike with a big f*cking hammer usually works. |
