I'm installing early (original vw) pop outs on my 1961 beetle, which does not have pre-drilled holes. So far I've drilled the hinge holes and attached the window, and now I'm trying to figure out the holes location for the latch.
My problem is that I don't know how the latch should look like in the closed position. When mocking up it almost looks like there are 2 different positions that is can be - one where the knob is far from the headliner and one where it's up against it.
These 2 photos show it in the far from headliner position. The arm folds and hits itself to a stop.
And these 2 photos show it in the close to the headliner position. This requires more pressure to squish the arm to the car and doesn't feel right, but maybe is crucial to pull the window shut? Also note how in both positions the latch part where the screws go is not in the same position on the body.
Please help... Only one shot in getting it right! _________________ If all else fails, stop using all else

if you pull back the fabric some bugs have dimples to show ya where to drill as i recall ?on my oval i think i just had to make my own marks n drill . but my 70 had dimples from the factory marking where to drill . ya it needs to be back far enough to pull the window in so its tight when in the closed position not sloppy loose .
maybe you can feel the dimples thru the fabric ?
i think it helps to have someone outside pushing in on the window so its fully seated first . when all done the latch pulls it in snug .
you dont have the welt on yet , it may change where to drill with the welt in place . its been many years since i have done any of these . |

Pretty sure they are supposed to be up against the body.
It is slightly vague, but you can check out the Technical Bulletin for installation here:

Don't drill the holes until you have the pinch welting installed around the window opening. Pull the window shut tight, position the base, tighten the knob, and drill the holes slightly toward the north of the up and down play, to compensate for the sag when the window is open.
Your alternative is to find someone with popouts and take measurements. I used the above method and have no complaints. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Thank you to all who responded. I was hoping for photos of the latch in the closed position. How far is the plastic knob from the headliner? _________________ If all else fails, stop using all else

I looked through my photo archive for one showing that, but not seeing anything in there that shows exactly what you are asking.
Now, I did find this.
Those salvaged German popouts were installed by the upholstery shop that I hired to install the headliner in 1992. By 2008, a LOT of travel with the top open on the dusty high plains had got the mohair pretty filthy so I replaced it. Did the job myself this time. Looking at my original unedited files, I found I took some shots during that process. Here are pictures of where the removed popout windows left their indent on the headliner, compared to the window opening and the seat belt mounting hole.
And a photo of it after the headliner was changed, popouts re-installed, but prior to cutting the holes for the seat belts.
