|

Would a new alternator cause detonation? I recently replaced the old externally regulated alternator for a new internaly regulated one after it was no longer providing adequate voltage. Now it seems after the new alternator has been installed there is detonation. It has dual carbs so they were not touched, nor was the distributor moved.
I have checked the obvious areas, valves, carbs, checked the timing, checked for exhaust leaks and vacuum leaks and still no change. My next step is to check the plugs and plug wires but was wondering if possibly the renewed voltage to the car has increased the spark intensity at all. Probably a crazy idea but I may never know if I do not ask. |

That is possible, however I filled up with 90 octane after noticing the detonation. Last night I tried some 93 octane. I have not driven it much since then so I will see what that does

Under load. It doesn't do it when idling. |
