i have started asking on the 36/40hp page about this engine, trying to find out what is the closest year, or what parts are from what year

look at this road draft tube, obviously not 1600, any idea what year it might be?

i think the air cleaner is WWII 25hp, your thoughts?

the carb, not a 34pic3 obviously, 1 big error, no throttle, i can fix that, but any idea what it might be? assume manual choke, where did that connect?

In the original Herbie movies, they modified several VW Beetles that played Herbie to be driven from the rear seat in order to give the illusion Herbie was driving by himself.

Here is my progress on my first Revell Blind Driver Herbie (it is the same green car I posted yesterday)

The top of the oil breather looks like a later 36hp one but the tube has a slightly wrong shape to to it.

Carb is 53 25hp since it has an accelerator pump.
53 is the first year for that.

Earlier carb/fuel pump can be seen in this 1952 engine pic

You can see the choke connection and linkage on the left side there - it's the same for the later carb too

T air-cleaner ended in 1952 so sort of a mismatch there.
The engine I posted above has a cyclone air cleaner (optional)

Waiting for the paint to cure before assembly. The body is in Tamiya metallic Orange and the engine block and supercharger housing were done with Tamiya Clear Red over AK Xtreme Metal steel.
I drilled out the magneto and added plug wires from .5mm lead wire painted with Vallejo Air Black. Cast texture was added to the diff with AK EASY CAST texture putty and it, the front beam, pan, magneto and blower hat were painted with the AK Steel. Tires and seats are painted with Tamiya Black. Chrome was touched up with a 5mm Molotow chrome marker.

So many things to comment on!

That Herbie rear driver setup looks great.

That motor is a total mish-mash. The carb looks 28 PCI, which is 'late '52 through '60. Were I building that, I wouldn't try and make it a specific year and model, but rather a good general representation (which is what it is).

Great progress photo on the Zinger! Remember there is also a dedicated Zingers thread where you could post some results photos.

So when I was 13 I got my first Revell Herbie, sadly it was to incomplete to be restored:(

I used parts of it on other kits (the shifter is in my rear seat driver Herbie) and eventually I had was the chassis. I had another kit (a newer Revell beetle) that had a usable shell, so what I have decided is to make this Herbie float on water.

All interior parts (except for the Dashboard and roll bar) are removed and replaced with foam. I will have the body done soon.

There was a Herbie in the original film that jumped the pond, it was an engineless car with a fiberglass shell

I hadn't seen that they had re-released the old airfix bugle buggy kit - I remember it from my youth Laughing

Really nice zinger, slalombuggy!

Volkaholic, the engine kit looks nice but it will be a real challenge to make it 100% correct. I wouldn't sweat the details, that's the fault of the designers and for VW for authorizing it with such obvious errors (like the removable generator stand). 36 HP engines should have a wire tube for ignition wires, wires were never routed like that!

well the wires was 1 of my other questions,

oil pmp is almost done, dip stick is started, will post pic when complete

so all 36hp had the wires run in a tube? or just some years?

I dont know how recently the Airfix kit has been available. I got it at the local hobby shop and it looked to be part of a collection that they bought up. There was some military kits for sale with really faded boxes and artwork that I havent seen since the early 80s when I worked at a hobby shop.
