A brief guide to repairing damaged cabinets or parts
A brief guide to repairing damaged cabinets or parts:
#1 I purchased a mid 70's cabinet for my 69 bus.
#2The laminate was broken off the drawer.
#3 Remove old laminate with a belt sander
#4 Materials - cleaned drawer, recycled laminate (thank you samba member Tom S. of Stanford CA), contact cement & disposable brush.
#5 Contact cement evenly spread over BOTH surfaces....let dry 20 minutes.
#6 Laminate glued to drawer front (some excess trimmed with laminate tool. Not necessary)
#7 Trim with router or roto zip tool. Note: lightly sand routered edges, they can cut you.
#8Same day, same drawer. 1 1/2 hours start to finish.

Where did you get your laminate?
I've been trying so hard to find a place that has that Laminate so that I can redo mine. _________________ 1979 Westy |

It's obviously a chunk of original laminate someone sent him. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

He said it was reccled laminate, thanks the samba member he got it from and in the photo it shows a piece of laminate with jagged edges. How many more clues do you need? _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Alternatively, in a case like this you can clean up the break line so it's nice and straight along the grain line and then splice in a piece just over the damaged area. The damaged laminate can be removed with some heat (heat gun) and putty knife. This uses up far less valuble OG laminate (and keeps the grain oriented the right way). You do have to live with a joint line but if you pick a good match section of laminate it can be made almost invisible. I even found a usable piece of laminate on the back of one of my cabinets that I stripped of and used as repair. _________________ Dirk

Section 2719, page 942 in volume 17. You don't have the full library set? I don't either. It would cost more than my bus did.
If you couldn't understand it in Pete's posts it would be a lot harder to know what's going on in a real manual.
BTW, thanks Pete. _________________ 71 Superbug

Good technique, but I am going to sound like a pr!ck here... in future you may want to match up the grain (ie turn it 90 degrees) so that it matches the cabinets next to it. Sorry, comes from my training as a wooden boatbuilder. Another note to wood grain, flame up!(as my foreman always used to say...looks better if there is any flame in the grain). |
