I just adjusted my rear end to lower it back to more of a stock height - in doing so one sway axle moves super easy, glided around to where ever I needed it - but the other side was so stiff I had to hammer it around.
After doing my adjustments I gave the thing a bounce to test the spring tension and noticed that the stiff side won't move.
What next?! Shouldn't it swing freely - it's so stiff my 220 pound weight barely moved that side. |

IF it is super stiff to move with the axle unbolted you either have a bent axle or the spacing on the axle side cover isn't right. The tube should glide easy on the plastic "flower" inside the side cover. if it doesn't you may need to add more paper gaskets.
I had a buggy with a bent axle tube and it was really hard to move. When I pulled the bearing cap and bearing I couldn't get the bearing back in as the axle wasn't concentric to the tube.

I'm new to this, I take it I need to take the whole swing arm off/out? I'll have to check my Haynes manual but this doesn't sound good... |

Ok some research, aside from a tragic bent axle, the majority of the rebuild of a swing arm involves lubrication - what type of lube is needed or recommended for the swing arm internal assembly? Can't be as easy as standard lithium grease..... |

The bell and "flower" (packing) are lubed by gear lube in transaxle.... If SA is stiff, its probably not a lube issue but maybe to little play in way it was assembled...
Gasket #12 (or multiple ones) are used as spacer or shim to get proper clearance or free play in bell/packing...
Try loosening up the six nuts (about 1 turn) that holds retainer plate in place and see if you get freerer movement, if so you may need to add a gasket or two more , becasue last guy in there didn't get spacing right...

so, it's possible that this could just be stiff as be-jesus because the tranny hasn't rolled or turned in like 6 weeks?
i'll check the single turn on the bolts as well. |

No.
Its probably not enough shims.
Actually it sounds more likely that the fulcrum plates and spade ends of the axle and possibly the inside surface of the differential side gear has galled and are seizing instead of allowing the SA to pivot freely. Sometimes loose metal chips worn of the fulcrum plates will actually "weld" the parts together(thread attached below).
Pulling a swingaxle isn't a huge job but you need a puller to get the bearing and housing off the end of the axle and a good big pair of circlip pliers for the snap ring.

Single turn out on the bolts did the trick - now can someone point me to a link on how to remove the swing arm? Can't figure out how to get the axle out of the bearing.... Or do I need to? |

Also, what is the correct shim measurement - can't find it online just "1 or 2" shims... Don't sound right to me. I know they come in packs.
And after you pull the bearing, how do you press it back in?
Again thanks for the help. |

The only documentation I have states add shims till you get freedom of movement...

Any links to how to get the bearing back on after it's pulled? |

It will freely slip over the axle up to the end of the splines, a piece of steel pipe over the axle or even a flat punch and light taps with a hammer, going around and around on the face of the inner race will get it in place. Its pressed home with the drum and axle nut. This thread cautions keeping the spacers oriented correctly.
