Thanks.

What is a good keyword for finding salvaged Subaru's with good engines?

Get it, the mount looks like its gunna be nice and smooth.

I had a KEP setup, kinda similar and loved it.

you'll need wiring work still and some rubber, but this is pretty much all you need cept the donor.

you can also do some copart.com auctions, might be able to fight the russians and get a good deal on a wreck.

As you may have read, a while ago I did a full rebuild on my 2.1. It was my first ever engine rebuild of any kind.
I got 10,000 miles out of it and now have a power loss issue. I knew going into it that I may fail, but I wanted the experience.
Soon I am going to pull the engine and try to repair it. One intake lifter is stuck in the bore and might be mushroomed on the other end.
I'm not sure if this is the problem.
Recently I received a free 2.1 from a local member that did the Subaru swap. I am going to try to swap out some of his FI components and hope that solves the issue.
If I can't get to the bottom of this, or I have major work to do, I may do a swap.

It's kits like this that make it so tempting. Something like this could finally free me up for all the other van projects. Smile

well considering I had 2 donor subie motors (now just one) the title of my project thread could have been RMW subie kit class project! If this thing were out when I made the decision! Wink It looks like the best subaru kit available by far!

I am going to be doing an install for someone in the next couple weeks that bought the RMW kit. I leave feedback on how it goes.

It sure looks good in the pic and there other work gets high praise so I'm sure it should be top notch.

I search Seachtempest for Subaru's. I like to find whole car to make sure the harness is gently pulled and nothing is missing. I like the 1995 best and the 90-94 are easier to find but the harness takes more time.

Tips for pulling the harness on a 98 forester? the undercarriage won't pass inspection, but the motor only has 113k on it and it has a new timing belt and a bunch of other new parts.

I use my skidsteer and forks to ripoff the drivers fender, and then it is about 6 to 8 hours of fun!!

Your 98 Forester harness will work with a 95 ej22 also. I have installed 95 2.2 in 98 Foresters that had bad motors, 2.5 dohc motors, bad, bad motors.

we found out about the heads on the way out to Indiana. Rolling Eyes but had them replaced only a few thousand miles ago, Just had a fresh timing belt put in and the harmonic ballencer re-installed after it liberated itself from the front of the crank. Rolling Eyes am I thinking wrong when I think we have the bases covered with this and it should be a good donor?

If you already have and it drives good, throw it in. If you do have a failure at some point there are plenty of options.

WTF? aren't you the stock engine thread guy? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=431525&highlight=

The RMW kit does look like a nice bit of kit. I would rethink running the CAI in dusty conditions and plumb it into the stock intake system.

I have had a reliable stock rig for 10 years, so yeah, I'm that guy, rooting for the stock engine.
However, I am not a fan boy. I am not brand loyal. When a problem comes up, I look at all options.

Very respectable outlook.
I like that RMW offers many options in their kit so a buyer can tailor it to their needs.
A searchtempest search with a max price could narrow down your search and net you a potential donor.
There is a insurance auction site that people post about here as well that might help copart.com

As someone that put his own kit together from RMW, SC, Korkwood, Tom Shiels, and John Lemly, I would say buy the kit.

The time and effort spent on cross checking, and sourcing from multiple people is nice to spread the $$$ around, but there is something to be said for having it all come as one kit.

And given that the product support from RMW is top notch, I would have gone this route had they been a month earlier on the realase date.

Gavin

PS - After doing everything myself aside from the harness, I also understand why people pay to have this done, and why the shops get the money they do. Had I not been able to borrow a vehicle for several months, and had the time to do this, it would have gone to a shop.

Mike and the RMW crew make some really nice stuff. Can't go wrong there.

Donors come in all cost ranges. A complete wrecker is most likely (so you get all the components).
I was lucky and found my EJ22 AND complete wiring harness for $275 - already pulled from the donor ('92 Legacy). Of course the motor had also been completely disassembled and hot tanked so I had no idea if it even ran - but it was worth the $275 gamble.
Started right up Very Happy and years later it is still kicking strong.

Like stated, keep searching and something will pop up
