The seal I removed was sitting flush with the housing, however, bentley mentions to drive the new seal until it stops, which when done, recesses the new seal inside quite a bit. Does the seal depth matter at all? should it be flush or should it be driven until it stops?

Shufti's write up shows the new seal recessed.

Maybe the last installer chose flush because it resulted in a better, or fresh location for the sealing lip (on the yoke).
