|

I have QSC pistons 96mm and stock stroke crank at 76mm
When checking clearance at bottom of stroke, bottom of piston skirt is very close to block casting. Less than .060, maybe very close to touching. I have Rockys offset rods. On his website, he states you may need to clearance block.
My problem is the whole motor is assembled, except for the heads. I took off one side of the piston liners and was checking the clearance of this. I do not know you had the clearance the block.
I took my pistons to the machine shop to have .070 cut off the bottom of the skirt. Has any one had to do this or clearance the block with QSC 96mm big bore pistons and a 76mm stock stroke crank?
Thanks! |

I am thinking about using the 96mm QSC pistons in my 2.1 liter as well.
I know your question relates to using the modified offset rods, BUT...
What would be the problem with just using the stock rods? I know they supposedly will not go all the way to TDC, but how short?
Do you really gain a SIGNIFICANT amount of power by purchasing the modified rods? |

I just finished my build. My lesson learned.
Get rockys offset rods. Buy QSC 96mm pistons from him with the chorme top ring. Get copper ring head gaskets. Get silicone hose for the intake runners.
Stock rods will be 1mm too short. (.040 inch) and will bring the piston down too far in the case (it will hit bottom of case). Too low compression ratio. 8.1 to 1 vs. 8.8 to 1 with correct rods. It will be slug on power with short rods.
Make sure you clearance block with 96mm QSC pistons. Rocky mentions this on his classified ads. I did not and had to clearance the pistons instead because I put my block together already.
Get 1.25 ratio rockers from CB Performance. You will need new 9mm valve adjusters from Go Westy cost plus 10% website.
Have your crank cut for tighter oil clearances. Use .010 under bearings and have the grinder cut for .002 clearance on rods and mains. Will give you more oil pressure. Balance everything.
Get 30mm oil pump with the oring cut in the back, will not suck air.
Thats about all my tricks. PM me if you want more info. |

I think I will just put that money towards an engine conversion, rather than sinking more money into a waterboxer engine.
My current situation is a scarred cylinder (I guess a piece of something got in there when putting the head back on) and I have no intention to break the case open. |
