‘86 Syncro having intermittent clunking noise from presumably the rear passenger side. Thought it was cv related, but local specialist said they seemed fine, but he didn’t pull them off. Crazy thing is it will happen, be very loud clunking, related to wheel speed, quiets but doesn’t disappear with clutch engaged, then will, after a night in the garage, go away, for weeks! When it’s happening it is scary loud and seems catastrophic. Once it’s gone van is running great. Any ideas? The clunk is similar to taking axle and laterally banging it toward and away from cv.

Get a long grease needle and pump grease directly between the CV bearings by sticking the needle under the small end of the boot. You could have the axle slamming back and forth as well. Sliding the boots one way or the other on the axle to force it into a new position either towards the centerline of the vehicle or away from the center line might help as well.

If I pull the cv joint will it be apparent if it’s toast? I suspect it’s cv related, but since it’s so intermittent, I’m afraid if I replace cv, I won’t really know if that’s the problem, and I’m planning a big trip in April, and don’t want it to be a different issue that arises again on a trip.

I've heard that. It's a CV that's either dry, or has a broken cage or both. Yes it sounds like hitting the van with a ball peen hammer. The joint is binding, then the turning forces it to bend and it lets go with a BANG!

Check with T3Technique for good quality CVs. Once they've banged you need new CVs, the ball tracks are all pitted.

If you're somewhat slovenly you can poke a needle greaser into the boot and it may go quiet for a couple years. But that's dodgy of course, cuz if it has broken the cage it might let some balls out then you're fooked.
