1968 double cab. Is the ID plate behind the passenger seat with the 9 digit number considered the VIN number? In addition to this isn't there supposed to be a metal plate drivers side just under windshield? Are these supposed to be the same number? Thanks. |

The VIN plate on the dash didn't begin until mid 69 along with door jamb stickers. The plate behind the RH seat and the number stamped into the engine surround metal near the battery are all there is on a 68, they should match. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

OK thank you the reply helped in putting this puzzle together. So my 9digit VIN starts with the first 3 numbers 268 which seems to match absolutely nothing about the VIN online? |

268 means 68 truck, the plate behind the left seat is where you'll find the M plate info and once decoded with one of the links in the FAQ at the top of the forum page it'll tell you all the minute details.
As for who want's to buy without seeing the truck I can't even guess. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Someone asked me the other day where my VIN plate on the dash went. They thought maybe the dash has been replaced or maybe it had been stolen previously and removed. It really freaked me out because I knew I got the bus from the original owner (original pink and all). After reading this post I now know why it isn't there and feel a whole lot better.
It is a 69 Kombi with a build date of 9/68 and they didn't have them on the dash yet. what further solidifies the early 69 build is the sporadic use of 68 parts like the rear view mirror.
And yes I checked, the M-Plate VIN number matches the chassis by the battery.
Thanks again Samba!!! |
