I keep burning up the voltage regulator in the idle control relay, it there an upgrade for the replacement part. every time I turn on the a/c it burns the Voltage regulator. Is there one that will tolerate the a/c being turned on.
hy is that a/c popping the relay??
Thanks

something funny going on, the idle controller does get a signal when the ac is on, so that idle speed can be increased to allow for the extra load of the ac, kind of like it get a singal form teh power steering pump when the pressure is high (pump working hard).
I'd look to see what signal the AC is actually sending to the idle controller, I am not sure what the signal should be, but It maybe is supposed to be a gorund being made?
anyway see what the ac signal wires is sending when the ac is switched on. |

How much current can the Amplifier handle? is there a replacement part which can handle the current? right now I'm using a NTE185 it's rated 80-80-5volts 4A, PD 40W would the NTE36 work at 140 a 12v ??
Where does the A/C signal come from?? I think the signal is not grounded, it is a positive signal.
What else is sending signals to the relay besides the A/C and P/S and Temp sensor?
Sorry for all of the questions
Steve
I think I'm going to try the NTE36, I have no idea what the results will be, if someone knows please stop me if I'm wrong!! |

You mean the output transistor? The large transistor is not a "voltage regulator" per se, although it does look like one.
I suspect that there is something wrong with the idle stabilizer valve itself. Maybe it has an internal short. Does the Bentley have a resistance specification for this component?
Try this: Unplug the idle stabilizer valve, and then turn on the A/C. Does the transistor get hot? It shouldn't.
The NTE185 is a PNP transistor. The NTE36 is NPN. These are not compatible. I don't recall what transistor I used when I repaired mine 7 years ago, and I don't have a stock engine anymore. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

You are correct on the part description
I'll try your suggestion this afternoon if I have time
Thanks |

Have you pinned the A/C and fuel injection harnesses and made sure each terminal is in the proper location in the plastic connectors?
Frying ECUs and now ICMs
Are you using all D series parts including the wiring??
What year is your van again???
Sounds to me like one of the grounds is hot and backfeeding when you turn on the AC.
I am throwing away a complete rear AC unit with column wires...you want it?
I also have a complete AC unit still in a van. You can have it if you pull everything, I have no interest in it or time to part it. |

What is the difference between the "B" idle control unit and the "D" version? I just replaced my "B" with a "D". The valve hums/vibrates and the engine idles fine now. _________________ 1987 Westfalia, Automatic. EJ25 VANARU Conversion |
