So before I returned to the States in July, I had one last opportunity at a VW bus weekend. So, I went to the Hockenheimring 2009 VW bus event.

The driver of this beautiful (was) double sliding door T3 tried to race with the big boys and took the curve too fast for the drivers skills and rolled it over.

I couldn't figure out how to get the url to upload, so I copied and pasted.
The second url is more of the same event with more photos of the wrecked T3.

WE were there two years ago and had a great time. As part of your admission you get an hours time on the "Ring" you get this mix of 10 /10 ers and novices all out on the track at the same time . We were there with a 78 van that was SOLD at the end of our trip . I was piloting it carefully when some of the hot dogs dumped the track with oil behind me and this guy came into the corner and all you heard was a loud thunk as it hit the ground.
It was at that time I decided to get off of the track and retire to the pits. This is not to be missed event if you can make it there.

This is what a friend of mine had to say about that maroon van about two years ago:

"The maroon Westy is owned by a friend of mine, i've been in it at 240 kmh on a German Autobahn!!! Funny you noticed how well it handles, the reason is he fitted the complete Porsche Stability management (PSM or traction control) This is basically variable braking and is quite amazing. 3 years ago at Hockenheim he let me drive in a carpark ( not on the open road, shame!!) this carpark was wet and with full steering to the right ad foot to the floor on throttle the bus just went round in pefect circles without losing grip. The engine is limited and the wheel spin is controlled by the PSM. he keeps this switched on at all times round the track,This is why he's a bit slower than the other but never loses grip!!"

Sub-hatchtim,

I used Das VW Bus Land.de http://www.vw-bus-land.de/ for the 6 years (well 5 years actually - one was in Afghanistan) I was living in Germany. I used to plan my vacation days around various VW bus events.

Click on "termine"
Hockenheimring for VW busses is June 22-24 this year sponsored by Peter Hille.

There is usually a guy named Helmut there (has/had a white Vanagon) selling his products. Really nice guy. He makes alot of fiberglass pieces. His website: http://www.rhoen-bull.de/advanced_search_result.php?language=en

If you can make it to Kochel am See Kesselburg, Wietzendorf, and Hatzenport, go for it.

I still have the Das VW Bus Land bookmarked, and I left Germany in 2009.

Enjoy,
Gary
