1984 water-cooled 1.9L Vanagon starting issues

Hi all, first post here.
ive got my vanagon (see title) and it runs for about an hour and then when i shut it off, it takes at least 10 minutes to crank back up. I thought it might have been the fuel pressure regulator so i just replaced it yesterday and also put a new ignition switch in, but same problem. Could it be an electrical/computer issue? Any info is greatly appreciated

Try unplugging the coolant temp sender for the ECU and see if that makes a difference. Report back.

Specifically, the Temp 2 sensor that should tell the ECU if the engine is cold or hot.

A common failure mode is a sensor that reports a cold engine irrespective of temperature - thus the engine becomes difficult or impossible to start until it has cooled down some.

The sensor is a blue cube on the rear of the engine:

thanks for the advice guys. havent had time to work on it yet, but i'll give some updates when i can
