|
|
A friend of mine gave me a call and asked if I knew what old VW buses were worth because he had been offered a bus but didn't want to pay too much or offer too little. He gave me the address of the home where the bus had been sitting for abot twenty years under a tarp. I couldn't believe what I was looking at when I drove up to the house. I called him back and told him to get it if he could. That's when he asked if I wanted it! Now I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Long story short, the split was in my garage two days later. 1963 15 window walk through with no middle seat or drivers seat, original paint, zero rust, and the motor fired up on carb cleaner! I was lucky to get it cheap and it was less than three miles from my house. Now the fun begins.

Now that's a good starting point for a new bus guy. Congrats and welcome to the club. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

Here are a few pictures taken with a nicer camera. I've already taken the bus to Bustorations where Ron is going to get it running, stopping, install some safari windows (my favorite VW upgrade of all), replace all window and door seals, fix the holes in the decklid, the nose, and one in the rear that was cut for a air cleaner for a aftermarket carb. Then he is going blend the paint repairs and polish the original paint and add the front emblem. I've never even driven a split window before.
Washed and "rubbed" with a wet rag
Those are original windsheilds. I'm going to install safari windows, but keep the originals.
I was able to register the bus with the original plates too.
No drivers seat, but I did get all five original wheels and the rear bumber and trim. The bumpers and corners of this bus are nearly perfect. Never been bumped and no rust. |

What a score. congrats!
Also, excellent choice to take it to a pro and let them get it up to snuff. You'll be driving in no time! _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

I would work on that virgin myself!! Ronnie is a nice guy but sending that bus to a mechanic is like sending your sexy virgin girlfriend off to the football team for a "work out". |
