I have an early bus suspension and transmission I want to use on a buggy or trike. It sits too high because of the reduction gear boxes. I have found a 1968 IRS suspension but I want to use my wide 5 rims and tires because they were expensive. What do I have to do to put wide 5 drums on IRS suspension? Can I use my early bus drums?

All depends.. are you planning to use a CV Joint (IRS ) Type 1(Beetle/Ghia) or Type 2 (Bus) CV Joint (IRS) suspension?

If its type for type.. maybe.. if its cross type.. probably not.
The Bus drums are much larger.

To use wide 5 Type 1 drums... with a Type 1 CV Joint (IRS) rear.. and keeping and using the 68 newer better rear brakes..

Conversion drums and done....

Search wide 5 IRS.. Its a popular conversion. ..
Always try searching for previous covered topics FIRST..

There is lots and lots of info available about converting 4 lug to wide 5 in the HBB Off-Road forums.

rear thing drums will go right on, but they are 1 inch wider yet the shoes are the same as the 68 bug.

Yes the early Bus rear drums (up to 1963) with small spline will work on a IRS rear brakes. The rain gutter on drum has the to be machined off and snout has to be machined shorter.
CIP1 sell cut down Bus drums to do this. There is a picture in their online catalog if you want to look.
My Dad and I did this back in the 1970s to replace stock brake drums that break from really wide wheels used in the sand.
