Hey I'm totally new to Samba, Vanagon's and VW's... I don't know what I was thinking but I'm totally addicted.

I just got an 82 westy that needs some love. I have no idea what I'm doing and was wondering if there would be someone in the area who may want to help me get going on the project. I certainly can't afford full rates. She runs and drives as she sits. Has trouble shifting into first which from what i've been reading could be as simple as a bushing, stop plate or clutch adjustment or more complicated. This is priority number one for me as well as a long good cleaning.

Of course there's plenty of other stuff...

Here's a link to her photo album.

If anyone would be willing to help show me a few things and take a look that would be amazing. I will compensate accordingly. I'm a smart guy in way over his head.

Congrats on the new obsession. You are in Vanagon Central here in Portland. I have used Halsey Automotive for 18 years and they are a good shop for big things, but, sounds like you just need to have a post-purchase focus session. In that case, I recommend Aaron Coy of VansWest PDX. He is trying to get his own shop going and currently working out of his garage in West Linn. Just had him do some Pre-Moab sorting on my van and all I have to say are good things. His email is [email protected] and phone 360 420-2387. @$50/hr, dirt cheap and worth every penny. He will help you prioritize and do things according to your budget.
Keep an eye out for gatherings on a semi-frequent basis by clicking on the link in my sigline. Welcome.

Nice van. A light solution of bleach and water @ 1" in bottom of the spray bottle, top off with water, sprayed directly onto your fuzz inside the poptop, will get rid of the mold. just cover your seats and carpet and wear eye protection. Pretty much just spray it on there on a warm day and watch the mold on the fuzz dissapear before your eyes. Also, for the first big wash, put a couple squirts of automatic dishwasher fluid in some hot water with a small amount of Tide. The bleach in the dishwashing liquid gets rid of all kinds of algae and mold.

You joined on 4-20, my wifes birthday. Cool

Thanks for the info! That sounds like exactly the type of operation I'm trying to find.

Thanks!

Hey Vansbeengone

Nice rig. Looks like its all there and just needs effort + coin. Seeing the munch on the slider/quarter panel reminds me of what I just did to mine. Bodywork is easy if you have patience and the parts.
Jeffrey is right about Aaron offering low cost for great help. Halsey is good on parts prices too. It is also worth mentioning Traftons on Stark deals with air-cooled rigs.
Did you get a Bentley manual with the van? Do you have tools? With those ingredients you have keys to the kingdom.

Welcome to madness.

Cheers,
Jeffery
