Finally getting ready for some epoxy primer after all the metal and body work.
Should I spray the inside first then mask off and do the exterior or shoot it all wide open?
Gonna do a two tone. Was going to paint the interior the same color as above the belt line.
Here’s where im at now:
Was thinking a Pampas green lower with a creamy white or the porcelain green top like the ‘61 Ghia color _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |

All at once is a lot of reaching contortions and trigger time. Plus there will be a lot of coarse overspray getting covered up in and out.
On the other hand if you're cool with that then it's done all at once. |

So would it make sense to mask off the interior and shoot them at separate times? _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |

I don't want to be the only one that answers you.
I've done one and I had all the doors off hanging so that is different and easier to mask.
You could mask the windows, have all the doors open with their outside masked, mask a wide strip on the outside body so you get all the jambs, then shoot the inside.
For the outside do the opposite but you could tape the jambs and shut the doors to spray the outside. |

we're in the same stage!
i need to do a little bit bodywork on the nose and then spray the whole outside in epoxy and final primer. (inside is already in final primer)
then i'm going to mask the outside and paint the inside myself before it goes to a painter who does the opposite and masks the inside so he can paint the outside!.

Personally, I like to mask the outside and paint the inside first. _________________ -Thom

Seems like your asking two different questions.
For primer it probably does not matter if you do sections or all at once. Over spray will happen but your going to do some sanding anyways.
For top coat i sprayed my interior completely first. I then sprayed the bottom color and last the top. Seams other than the belt line (where it matters) were done at the door seals.
Have fun. _________________ 1964 Original Owner build Thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=702135&highlight=

Thanks for the responses. I think I got a plan now. Did you paint your jambs to mirror the two colors at the belt line and is your interior color the same as the upper color if it’s a two tone? _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |

Yes.
Don't have any good images to share but there are lots in the gallery. To me, the important tape line is the front nose. As i am sure you know the tape line is not hidden by the belt trim so you have to be precise at the nose to make it look good. _________________ 1964 Original Owner build Thread. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=702135&highlight=

| Also what gun are you using? High Volume Low Pressure guns are more forgiving if you were to shoot the inside then move outside without masking. |

Im using an hvlp gun. I’ve read to spray the lower color a bit over the belt line then tape off the lower and spray the upper color. I need to get my doors all lined up and the rear hatch dialed in.
Looking at the 61 ghia green with a cream colored upper color

Im certainly no painter but with that said Ive painted a ton of cars. I am almost the painting stage myself, I've chosen to do what I think you or someone else said based on my build time-line, what I have, and will need, my space and funds, etc.
Someone said they are priming and painting interior themselves, which is what Im doing, then I'll paint the outside another day or time, or possibly have someone do it for me, either way, I want the inside done first so I can put in my gauges, steering wheel, wiring, and tidy up some things to get it close to being a driver or roller, then finally paint the outside.
What kind of paint/color are you using? Not sure if I missed that. I've changed color options so many times in the last year Im at no rush now, aside from the inside, which my brain is locked in on a good off-white clean and simple, stock-ish vibe. _________________ Vintage problems require vintage excuses. |

Well im thinking of going with a Pampas Green like the ghia above for the lower color snd a beige or cream white ( maybe the L87) for the upper and roof area.
Probably using a single stage urethane. _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |
