|
|
Hello All,
I'm in the middle of a restoration of a VW Thing and I am currently working on the transmission. While I have it out, i want to repaint it, primarily so it looks a better. I have already attacked it with a wire weel and cleaned up a lot of it, but because it has so many cracks, crevices, and indentations, I am thinking of just taking down to my local blaster and having them clean it up.
My question is: what do I have to worry about if it is blasted? What should I tell the blasting people to pay attention too? Specifically, I am concerned around the drive flanges. I don't think i have any leaks there at the moment, but can blast material get in through there? Should they be taped off before they do it (area circled in red below).
Also, on the bell housing, I am planning just the outside. I don't see a reason to do the inside.
Finally, any recommendations on paint? This is not a show car, just a fun project I am doing myself. Typically on all the suspension components, I have been using POR15 and then top coating. I think the POR15 would get all puddled up in the aforementioned nooks and crannies.
Thank you,
Jay |

I cleaned mine up and used Master series products on mine. Took some time to mask off different areas, but I'm happy with the results

man you have to have that thing sealed for a blaster -- Even then,, you should flush it
If you want it to last you have to shoot it with urathane -- auto paint -- no rattle can !

Don't give up yet JayC!
Buy some smaller wheels that you can fit into the crevaces and clean it up real good. Like Jerry said use good autopaint and you'll be a lot happier.
I used some old DP 40 I had in my cabinet and then Rustolium Hammered silver.
Your's looks real nice too beetlenut!

Thank you guys... I'll keep on it. It actually looks better than my original picture (that was when it first came out).
Nice pictures!

| I used lots of degreaser to remove the thick grudge with wire brush. Then i used gasoline to get out all the stuff in the crevices. After I got to the point where I was satisfied, I wiped it all down with paint thinner. Then I used VHT 5000 Degree primer followed by VHT High Temp Paint. Came out really good. Pic of tranny on my build thread. |
