|
|
after hearing about using a motorcycle jack to remove a vw engine on this site i purchased one. This is a great tool and it is much safer than balancing an engine on the standard floor jack. After my 3rd engine removal/install i decided that an adapter was in order to make the job safer for me. the width of the engine is only slightly wider than the space between the horizontal supports of the jack. During both engine installs i had the engine try to fall off into that space ...sooo here goes
I cut a peice of 3/4 plywood 13 3/8 inch wide by 14 3/8 long and put 2 furring strips (1 x2 wood strips)13 inches long 10 1/4 inches apart (the width of the engine) on top
on the bottom i put 4 furring strips spaced 8 1/2 apart double stacked ;long enough to catch them between the large bolt heads on the jack so the plywood won,t slip front to back in the jack
I drilled a hole in case i want to drain the oil and chiseled out an area so the taco plate isn,t supporting the engine weight. The other problem i had was fitting an engine that was perfectly flat onto a transmission that was tipped because the vehicle was up on a jack.in order to tip the engine to fit i put a "woodnut"on either side of the bottom of the plywood and threaded a screw through. With a fender washer jammed between two nuts I can tip the deck by turning the nuts with a wrench(speedwrench works great)
with a good coat of oil base paint this will last through many engine changes
UPDATE after using this adapter plate to remove an engine to work on it;I found that this makes a great engine stand. In the following photo you can see the height ( compare it to my work stool milk carton) to work on the engine is great AND very sturdy

Outstanding Pete. You're on a roll.
Side to side leveling is where we hit the snag here, looks like you've got that problem covered. And we didn't have the side to side or rotation hindered by your indexing to the jack. Hope you don't have it too snug or you will have to rely on your truck driving super skills. Your pictures show you havn't used it yet. _________________ 71 Superbug

Groovy design. I have the same jack and I'll be using it for my engine pull later this summer. I think it will have a 'St. Pete' adapter on it. _________________ "Consistent maintenance with quality products is the cheapest warranty you'll ever need."

Is your adapter designed for engine only, or engine/transmission as a unit? |

outstanding Pete. We've used something like that and it works super. I put a board in a regular Jack and a nail in that board. That nail sits into a factory support hole for tooling in the bottom of the transmission. When I lower them I can control the trans nose and the engine. When you do this you will also find that if your floor jacks rolls well, when you pull the engine on your new jack, the other jack will roll right with it like a coal tender on an engine and it will make it really easy to move them around mated.
Yours is much nicer and much better craftsmanship than mine

Great idea! The front-back leveling is where I always have problems... working on a dirt driveway! _________________ '71 Westy |

ccpalmer;i used carraige bolts but will change them before i use it again, regular phillips head bolts will lower the engine farther down.it's great that everyone appreciates my little project
hywaycallin ;engine only...Never took 1600 out with trans..too much weight for the "old guy" _________________ 63 two fold rag

Very neat, I recently used one of those jacks, without the plywood pad, to r&r the engine and tranny in one unit. Next time I will have the plywood pad for sure. Thanks for the pics. |

I've had one of these jacks for about ten years.I can put my Harley Electraglide on it all by myself. I was wondering if it would work for an engine pull on my new bus. Now I know the answer. Thanks. _________________ If you only have one tool in your tool box, and it's a hammer, pretty soon, everything looks like it needs to be whacked!

I can pull/install the engine by myself in roughly 2 hours time because of this little guy. Didn't even do it on purpose. My floor jack was being used, and the MC jack was all I had.
Works beautifully! _________________ '63 slow n low build thread...

Anyone ever use a pallet jack to install/remove a Type 4? Not quite sure if it would go high enough. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters

Maybe if you put a banana crate on the pallet jack? Or some sort of table to put between the jack and the motor. From my experience, they only lift about 7 inches.
I have my eye on one of these:
