I have pict 34 on a 1600 (technicly it has over sized jugs to make it 1835cc) that runs great and idles great. I have had it on two seperate engines and had exactly the same problem both times.
Everytime i pull up to a stop sign the engine dies and then i have to hold the throttle wide open to get it to start back up, and it starts hard like its flooded. If i gently slow down nice and easy, slow enough to dang near cause an accident it idles fine and no problems. If i let off the throttle, engage the clutch, wait on the RPM to drop to idle and then stab the brakes reasonably hard it will kill the engine every time. The only way to not kill it is to start gently slowing to a stop like a block before you have to stop.

So i pulled the top off of the carb after a short drive and the fuel level looks about 3/4 to the top of the bowl. That doesnt seem like an over filled carb does it. So what the heck is wrong with my carb?

Warped top/ bad gasket allowing fuel to get sucked down the throat when there's a lot of sloshing around?

Or a bad needle valve. Maybe the float has a hole in it? Or what esde said.

There isn't much to that system...it has to be too-full float bowl overflowing into the carb throat. Check your needle valve, float, and fuel pressure (you only need 2-3 psi)

Are you sure it isn't a wire somewhere that is swinging forward during braking and shorting out on something?

So the problem turned out to be the solenoid valve by the throttle linkage. I noticed it wasnt clicking when i removed the power wire so i removed it and discovered the plunger was broken off and not even there. I put another used carb on it and the problem went away.

Now the engine falls on its face when i stab the accelerator even after setting the acc pump to its max setting. I cant win. I have three used carbs now, so i think i can throw enough good parts into one carb to get it running good.

Im not a VW guru so i dont know what the distributor is. It has two vacuum lines going to it. I have another distributor which has no vacuum lines. Maybe i should swap distributors and see if it helps. Man what a headache.
