I need advice on the engine. The body is in great shape, pans are great overall a great car. I am so excited, I fell in love with the Ghia.
I want to put a new engine in the car, the car has the 1600dual port and I want more power, the car is a 4speed any suggestions? |

If your engine has the wider oil passages with dual relief, Case savers and is in good shape, no problem. Using your stock crank, change all bearings, Bore the block out for some 92 or 94 mm P's&C's. Install a high lift cam, Posibly some big valve heads, toss on some webber 34's or 40's and have yourself a great running 1914. If you want to go any bigger than 2.0L, I've got two words for you: Upright Conversion. They can be costly to make, but if you're looking for the pig power, thats the way to go. They fit into Ghias much better than bugs. For some real speed, put the Tranie out of a 74 or later bug (It'll only have access to the diff from one side) in. If you wanna spend the big bucks, buy a new one like a Ranch performance pro street. Keeping your stock tranie will probably give you better acceleration and will be easier to drive.
When it comes to engines, go big or go home

Thanks for your reply.
I have heard some guys say to simply add the dual carbs and a 74 bettle tranie.
I don't want to spend a fortune on the engine, just want a little more power.
Any sites I can check out for engine mods? |

We got tons of power out of out 65 bus (with a late 1600 duel port) Just by adding a couple of Kadrons and a Bugpack quietpack with a merged header. IT cost less than $400 cdn and it sounds better now too. _________________ -James T

He got the Kadrons at a swap meet for dirt cheap. I bought the quiet pac from Bow-wow autoparts in Victoria. It's simple to install. When switching to Kadrons, or any dual carb, you should put a thick, soft gasget on the intake. The weight of the carbs sometimes causes them to pull out an start a leak. To avoid eccessive noise, use new gasgets when installing th e exhaust system as well. _________________ -James T
