Does anyone know where I can get a set of NICE coil-overs for a standard bug. I've seen them on cars in magazines but I cant seem to find what I'm looking for online. I'm not talking about the cheap ones that only give you like 4 positions... I want the fully adjustible threaded ones.
I think there are a couple brand names Pro and Red 9, that make coil overs but I cant find any websites or info on them. _________________ 71 Super

the rear suspension on a beetle is already ride height adjustable. just reindex the tbars and set the height wherever you want it - doesn't cost a penny, aside from labor time. want a firmer spring rate? easy, just swap in larger tbars. it's a great design, and porsche used it on the 911 for a quarter century - from 1964 through 1989.
what is the benefit of using these coil-overs on a beetle? quite frankly, if they don't allow you to adjust compression and rebound rates (like moton and jrz do) then they're completely useless imo. and adjustable rate coil overs are silly for a street car, this is race car stuff we're talking about.
the compression and rebound rates of the shock absorber must match the spring rate of the spring. in low-dollar non-adjustable coil over kits, they are usually wildly mismatched, resulting in laughably awful ride quality and poor handling. that said, i'm not familiar with the brand in this photo. _________________

We're talking about std beetles, you remove the front shocks and torsion bars, replace them with thru rods and coils for shocks.
Dropped spindles and coils should get you on the floor with the adjustability for dampening and height adjustment. |

Are the thru rods used to act as anti-sway bars? _________________ 79 super Vert

They normally just hold the trailing arms into the beam, with the ends free to rotate. But swapping one to a sway bar is simple. Replace the through-rod with a torsion bar and pin the torsion bar to the trailing arms at each end. You could also just cut out the center spring pack mount in the tube and use the old spring pack for the sway bar if you think it's sized right. |
