the pass side reinforcement rail on my 70 vert is rotted and needs replacement. The heater channel is solid everything else is solid. I know what your going to say.... rust is probably deeper than I think. This is one of those rare times when I don't think thats the case.I plan to cut off the remaining rail and fabricate one out of angle iron and flat steel.

My question is do I need to support the middle of the car when I cut the old out? or is there enough rigidity in the heater channel that as long as I dont sit in the seat the car should hold its form and not sag?

I would suggest supporting the pan so it doesn't move. Check the fit on that side door before and after you cut out that rail to get an idea if anything is moving. Check the fitment again as you are welding in the rail to make sure nothing has moved. Better to find out if you need to fix something before it is welded in.

You should brace the door opening so it doesn't move, maybe as easy as shimming the door to body tight.
Why not buy the proper replacement part? It's not that costly and will save you time fitting it, and make a better repair.

The heater channel will support the car plenty while you replace the support rail. I would use a replacement reinforcment rail that is readily available instead of angle iron.
