I changed the mounts on the tranny and now the engine is binding up and wont go all the way in. It almost seems like the rear trans mounts (threaded studs and nuts) stick up higher in the bell housing. Not sure if this is the reason why the engine wont go in, but could it be the flywheel is hitting the four studs? Seems like there need to be washers resting on the mount and then put up through the bell housing. Also note, this engine has never been in this Bug so what else should I look for if this isn't the reason? It's been 20 years since I've installed an engine in a Bug so any advice would be great. Thanks

Should washers be in here also?

edit: Is this a late 200mm (or larger) flywheel and an early trans case? I see some grinding on the bolt bosses. You might need to double check the bellhousing has been fully clearanced to fit the flywheel. Easier to do with the flywheel by itself, but if you bolt up the engine as far as it'll go, then turn the engine by hand, the flywheel will mark the bellhousing where it needs to be clearanced. If you're concerned about the studs, just grind the extra threads off the studs, it won't hurt anything. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=143578
I wouldn't put washers between the outside of the case and the mounts.
My guess is you're just getting the input shaft hung up on the gland nut. Double check the clutch disk is lined up well with a clutch alignment tool. But mine always needed vigorous rocking up/down left/right to get it to slide in. |

make sure the clutch disk is centered (use the installation tool or eye ball it with a long 3/8 extension). If the rear wheels are off the ground, while pushing the engine in have a friend spin a tire to help align the splines from the main shaft to the splines in the disk.
There are no additional washers between the mount and the trans |

| Thanks guys for the info. Yes, the fw is a 200 and the bell housing was previously grinded on for it. I've been out messin with it and decided to take a grinder w/ a flapper disk to the studs and flushed em up with the nuts. Seemed to do the trick and I got the engine in pretty easy the 2nd time around. Moral of this post I guess could be that sometimes those new mounts might not be a direct bolt and go application or I'm just an idiot who got lucky the 2nd time around. |
