|
|
I'm going to install a TDI motor in my '78 Bus. (Thread forthcoming)
I got 3 large boxes with most of the parts needed yesterday, but a couple brackets were missing.
I was hoping there was someone here that might be able to help me get them.
Thanks! |

You would be best to post part numbers and photos of the parts you need. Seeing as your post didn't mention what specifically you need help finding.
Also, bear in mind that as you're building Frankenbus, you bur the lines between where the differentiation is from a bus part, or a TDI part. Do you modify late bus parts to help you fit a TDI? Or do you modify TDI parts to fit the engine into the bus...

Fair enough. I figured I'd just supply the part numbers to whoever may be able to help. Anyway, these parts are one of the brackets that connects the engine to the motor mount on the mounting bar.
Part number 037 199 306A (marked 8 ) as well as
part number 037 251 346 (marked 20)
Seen here:
Also the whole oil filler pipe assembly (it mounts to the oil pan and makes checking and filling the oil via the rear door much easier)
Part number for the whole assy appears to be marked as 1
Seen here:

Ok then... That's something.
Seems like you're going the route of modifying TDI parts to make them work on your bus. Since the parts you're looking for aren't VW bus parts, but rather parts from a GTI/Jetta et al. You would likely have better luck in the water cooled forums, or on Vortex.
As for the parts for a Mexi bay engine... Look up "Antonio Trejo" in the classifieds. He has connections south of the border with VW Mexico.
Here's one of his ad's
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=614804
I'm not trying to chase you away, and I hope you post pics so we can see your build... I hope you understand what I mean when I say your modifying a set of parts not native to a bus... If you were trying to modify VW bus parts to accommodate your engine, we'd (I say we loosely, because I'm generally useless) probably be ALOT more help.
Also, have you tried taking those part numbers to a dealer? You'd be surprised to see what they can still get on special order... _________________ Mike

I am thinking you will need to post suspension and questions about the electrical system, steering etc here but about your engine in the water cooled forum. You'll get many more answers there than here. _________________

I was thinking there was at least one guy who sold some things from Mexico but couldn't think of a name, so thanks for that!
I doubt that any US dealer would be interested in sourcing a Mexican part, unfortunately.
And for the record, I'm trying to avoid modifying many parts at all, in reality I'm just bolting parts from two different vehicles into a third vehicle. (Well, I suppose there will likely be a few mods here and there, but I'm really trying to avoid that when I can and use VW-build parts as much as possible.)
The engine is from a '96 Passat TDI, the mounting parts, transmission bellhousing, clutch and starter are from a 90's Mexican Bay Bus and they are going into the '78 Bus.
Of course I don't expect you all to care much about TDI related issues, but I also knew there were a bunch of listers from around the world, and some who might be interested in the project, and so I hope at least one of you might be able to help me track down the last couple parts I need.
Also, there is a chance I need the input shaft too.

None of us can run parts wanted threads in his forum except under emergency type situations like I am broken down and need help with XXXX
It is against the forum rules and you'll get your thread locked for it by God. Besides - everyone of us has a laundry list of parts we'd love to find cause these are 35 - 40 year old cars.
As a suggestion keep the thread on your progress and put in lots of instuctions and photos for the next person who wants to do a TDI conversion

037 199 306A appears to be available here -- and since they're in Guadalajara they might be able to supply other parts as well:
http://www.cofana.com/web/catalogo.html
(never dealt with them, googling the part number brought up their page) |

What TDI engine Code you have??? im not sure the "mano de chango" bracket is usable with the ALH or BEW engine, with an 1Z or AAZ OK, but the ALH
Once you get the engine bay done, you should defenetly go the "whole enchilada" and weld a watercooled bay front runing the coolant lines all the way, don´t mess an otherwise good chace of having the best of 3 worlds move your own world!! _________________ "Sé que en algún lugar sus dedos pelean con un tornillo" (Remembering Carlos Amat)

I did google part numbers and came up with the cofana site. However the others didn't yield much, at least not yet. I know Google somehow sorts and eliminates things by region, is there some what to make it show me other results? I only had a couple results with the part number for the support and there has to be other sellers out there.
I am using a 1Z TDI out of a '96 Passat, so all the parts will bolt right up.
I do not plan to use the front of the watercooled bus, my goal is to make this "stealth" and not look any different from the outside. if I can't make cooling work without the front radiator, then fine. But I have seen others that didn't find it necessary.
I suppose I should start another thread on the thing, devoted more to the actual build. (unless the title of this one can be edited for searching purposes) I've spent most of the day cleaning the oil and grease off the old engine so it isn't as messy when I pull it, and cleaning up the new stuff too. |

I still say dealer...
You seem skeptical because you don't think they will source a Mexican part. I doubt they even know its a Mexican part.
Before you go crazy trying to find a place to buy your part, pick up the phone and try the most logical route first.

Just called my local dealer... He has the part numbers, and had pricing on them but has no stock and shows both the parts you need as NLA. Good news however is that they were in his computer. So they might well be sitting on a shelf at another dealer.
Another thought, is to search for a parts car in a scrap yard. Neither of those look to be high wear items. _________________ Mike

| I called my dealer. He said there wasn't a chance he could order those part numbers. Which is what I figured, since they are from a vehicle/configuration that was never sold in the USA. |
