|
|
Just finishing up wiring on my 67 12v and have been advised by auto electric shop that the wiper switch(2 speed) is no good. No problem, I'll get a new one....
JBugs #141-955-517 $64.95
Airhead #141-955-517 OE $116.08
Mid America NO LISTING IN CATALOG
Ive ordered many times from JBugs..always happy with service. I want to make sure I get a good replacement.
Ive also been burned by cheap ass parts (got front turn signal assemblies from Airhead...absolute crap...dont fit contour of front fender!!) I dont want to buy this switch twice.
Have any of you used the part from JBugs? Any suggestions on this??
Also, PO replaced the wiper shafts with new and re assembled. Im not 100% sure it is correct. Does anyone have any pix of the way the arms should be?? Once I get the motor out from under the dash I can post up pics if needed. Pics of yours would be great.
Thanks |

Just to clarify.. I have used Airhead several times as well and I'm very happy with their service too. My point was that there are obviously good parts out there as well as not so good parts (from everybody, Im sure). Airhead is good, I like their service. They are a good company
I just want to make sure that I don't purchase the wrong quality item.
Ok, I hope thats clear and no one's pissed!! |

I just looked at what Wolfsburg West wanted for this switch.
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=141955517
Somehow I'm doubtful of their listing. they say they want 29 dollars for a German switch.
I paid over 50 for this German SWF 141955517 switch - 20 years ago. - and I'm guessing when you see NOS or OEM ones for over $100 now, it's one of those.

What do you guys think?? WW is a highly regarded company from what Ive read on here!! This is where things get confusing? The low price scares me...the higher price makes me hesitate!! Decisions!!! |

I think I'd give WW a call and ask about the part on Monday. I've noticed that their website listings sometimes are outdated and reflect items that have subsequently changed manufacturers. |

I just got one of the WW switches last week, I haven't installed it yet. I don't see anything showing country of origin. All of the terminals are marked and it's stamped KLF on the front. I'll update this after I install it! _________________ BWD

I will call them tomorrow.
Here is my motor and arms. Does it look like the arms are installed correctly?
Have any of you ever used a 12v cordless drill battery to test the motor outside of the car? |

I just ordered one from WW. Shipping today. $29.00 is correct. They are german. They just started reproducing them. They said they had sold many with no issues so far!.
Thanks for your help.
Anybody see the pic I attached? Does it look like I have it right?? |

You can test the whole enchilada with a car battery charger.
Thats what I did and it worked fine.
Make sure the wiring is per the stock diagram... |

Well, after dealing with my WW wiper switch all day, I can't get it to work!
At first it kept blowing the fuse, now it's not blowing the fuse or working! Oh well! _________________ BWD

I have been looking into buying a new wiper switch ever since I bought my current bug, but the only problem with my current one is the valve to spray the windshield washer fluid onto the windshield, which I have never really needed to do anyway so this is a REAL low priority item. Anyway, back in 2007 I wrote an e-mail to Wolfsburg West asking about their new switch. Here is a copy of relevant portions:

I was interested in replacing my wiper switch. You have this 2-speed
german one. But does that work on my original 6V one-speed wiper motor
(I have a 64 sunroof beetle) which has 3 wires going between the switch
and the motor? Or do you need a special motor for it? I sure haven't
seen any 2 speed 6-volt wiper motors around.

Hi,
Yes the 141955517 wiper switch will work you will just use 3
terminals on the wiper swich and the wiring is as follows
Code: |
wiper motor wiper switch
54D goes to 53
31B goes to 31B
54 goes to 30

I choose to also jumper 53 and 53b together, that way both of the "on" positions turn the wiper motor on. However if you just use the one, the other position will allow you to "park" the wipers anywhere you want, if that appeals to you.
That 50 dollar switch shown in that 20 year old photograph I posted above is in my 62 Bug and used with a 1 speed motor. Initially with one speed, a 6V motor that already had a resistor to drop the voltage. Later, I added another resistor to, in effect, make it two speeds. Back in 2007 I drew and posted this diagram to theSamba:

Hmmm, that's very interesting. I was wondering if there was a way to make my 1-speed motor into 2-speed to take advantage of that 2-speed switch. Just 2 questions. First, very nice schematics! But what are values of the 2 resistors? Also, you have +12V (Fuse 1) on the lowest diagram (the one I would use). Does this mean you used this on your '62 Bug that was converted to run on 12V? Which means I guess I would need different values (half?) for the resistors you used. Or perhaps its just not doable with 6 volts. |

Got my switch and installed it last week. Waited a few days before reconnecting the battery because I was finishing my new carpet install.
Anyway, I finished the carpet, reconnected the battery....no joy.
My car is a 12v 1967. I attached all the wires from my new harness from the wiper motor to the new switch matching all the terminal numbers.
Everything else in the car works perfectly?.
Any ideas before I assume the switch is no good? |

Sorry I didn't see your question until just now. Yes, it's a 6V motor with two dropping resistors. I put more information about the resistors on the gallery page associated with that diagram. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=398182

Resistor #1 - 1.7 ohms;
Resistor #2 - 1.3 ohms; (but I use an adjustable hi-watt resistor so I can alter that at need) |

Did you ensure that the wiper rack itself has a good ground (the brass tab at the center 6mm-thread bolt)
You can check the wiper switch function with an ohmmeter, following the part of this that shows the 2-speed:
Switch off:
31b connects to ground (via its mounting to the dashboard)
30(+) connects to 53a
Slow speed position:
31b is open
30(+) connects to 53
High speed position:
31b is open
30(+) connects to 53b
Also, look at this thread where I tested the actual 1967-style switch that is in my Baja bug:

Okay, I checked the fuse...not blown (tried a new one too)
Checked the ground at the bar where the motor bolts to the body. Filed both sides bare to ensure ground. Still no joy.
I drew a diagram of how its currently wired...
Here is a pic of the motor...cant see much...
I have a multi meter that my dad gave me a cpl years ago. I admit, I dont know how to set it. Here is a pic of it. Does anyone know what setting I should have it on? Are the red and black sensors in the right place? When I check each terminal as described in Andy's link, which should I put on a ground and which on the terminal while testing?
Please dont be to rough on me... I you had questions for me in MY field of expertise, I would be gentle with you. |

On the meter, move the black probe to COM. Leave the red probe where it is. Turn the meter to the 200Ω position. Touch the leads together, you should get around .01-.05Ω, that is the resistance in the meter and the probles, equivalent to a direct connection (continuity). Then apply the probes as listed in my other thread - coninutity will be as in the initial lead test or just above it in resistance. Open will be no reading at all.

Does your motor work? Grab a piece of wire from a hot leg on the fuse box and conenct it to 53 - should run. If not I would suspect the motor or your ground connection. Andy, please double check this.
Also, bench testing would have been a smarter thing to do. And how are things in Indiana? Been out that way a couple times over the last couple months. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.
